Title: Message Storage
SenDog - September 20, 2006 10:59 PM (GMT)
What are the odds of increasing message storage size? More of a convenience than anything else, by not having to continually empty messages ...
Put some of our membership funds to increasing messages stored! (Or a forum where the 'search' and 'topics with new replies' buttons work)

I'm not sure-
I've just a skim through the Admin control panel and there didn't seem to be any options for setting that.
I'll have a more thorough look later-

You can get all the latest topics by clicking on the "todays active topics" link at the bottom of the forum page... Took me a while to figure that one out...

I'm not sure that I want membership funds going into increasing message storage just because some members are to lazy to clean out their messages.
Have you had a look at the index system I've started to create - its in the VIP lounge.

OMG! Colin that is so good!!
I just downloaded the braking & handling index and POW! There's everything laid out!
Well done!
It needs to be in some of the newbie areas as well, somewhere so they can see it exists and use it rather than asking the same questions-

Cheers keith.
Jason and myself have started some work on the beast, its rather boring work and needs time to evolve and complete, but agree its an improvement.
We want to consider min work for everyone, and suggest the index should be available online, rather than download to local hard disk.
I agree it could be moved to public spot, but it still needs work done.
ANY HELPERS ?????????????????????
Cheers - chat later ?

I would say 50 messages is on the lower end of the storage size, when compared to the standard for most forums these days. Cut that in half if you keep outgoing messages and large influxes of messages when items are placed for sale, and hopefully you can see where that extra bit of storage does occasionally come in handy. If this makes me lazy in wanting to avoid that frustrating 'inbox full', then I'm lazy.
What exactly is holding this back? I doubt it even costs anything extra, message storage requirements are tiny compared to pictures and multimedia. If this is an inbuilt limitation of the Invision board, then fair enough, consider my concerns voiced.
As for 'Today's active topics', what about the event where somebody does not visit the forum every day, but say, once a week and wants to view topics which have had replies in the last week, but may not have been replied to in the last day?
What I do like, is the preview message which is part of the topic subscription, which reduces the need to load the entire thread to view the response.
Cheers.

I reccomend that the 'file attachments' option be removed altogether to save the space. Anyone who doesnt know how to use imageshack shouldn't be posting at all!
it would also save our hardworking moderators from having to take down, and re-host each file.
Altezzaclub forum is the only forum i know that still allows file attachments!
And i'm down to pay extra! i don't mind - buy you dont have to CPUFIX, since you're so careful with your pennies. A penny saved is a penny earned - isn't that what they say :D

Yes, Interesting why do we keep doing it.
Hello up top.
Haha! 'Top' is occupied by a guy who wouldn't know how to use imageshack!

If you double the PM storage (i.e. another 50 PMs), you're only looking at around 10-25MB... 1kb per PM (max!?), 50 more PM's, consider that only 200-500 users will fill their inbox (generous estimate).
With your current host you've got 3 plans; $40=150MB, $60-500MB, $80-1GB (annually)... surely you can find 10-25MB (at most!) spare somewhere?
My 2c.

Sorry, no can do!
I've had a look through everything in the Admin Control Panel and things in the "My Controls" area are set by Invisionfree and non-adjustable, except what we can each change.
We have 190meg on I'free at the moment, and 1.5million page views.

Far out, Sean - what have you gone and started?
Before this divulges into useless muckracking and AU vs NZ, allow me to attempt to be a voice of reason.
1. Invision provides no option for changing the number of PM's you can hold in your inbox, all you can do is change the number it shows in one view, (default is 50).
2. We are still searching for a PHP coder who is willing to donate some time to developing a new site and forum. I am waiting for Invision to tell me if they are willing and able to provide us with a copy of our forum's database, and then we will purchase the Invision software, and run our own forum on our own host. I have the hosting ready to go.
Subsequently we want to limit any spending on these forums, since this is, and always has been a stop gap measure until we get our own forums running. Joe is also working on a new Altezza Club AU website, which will allow easier updating for admins other than Joe.
