Title: Image Posting And Your Avatar
Description: Read this NOW!

After discussing this with TBird2, we have felt a pinned thread is needed for this issue. Posting pics...
Rather than attaching images to the forum (and thereby using up space and increasing costs!) members should host them and link to them.

How?

Easy!

Follow these simple step by step instructions below

I would highly recommend these 2 hosters:
www.photobucket.com
OR
http://www.imageshack.us/

IMAGESHACK Instructions:

1) Upload the picture you would like to show by clicking the choose button, browse to the picture, and then click the HOST IT! button

2) Once the picture has uploaded, a new page will load, and you will see a number of boxes with different links to the images.

3) The trick is to choose the last one, "direct link to image". Copy the text in this box, paste it into your post on the forums. Place [ I M G ] at the front, and [ / I M G ] at the end (without the spaces, of course).
So, it will look like this:

PHOTOBUCKET Instructions:
1) Sign up, upload an image, and click on the "IMG CODE" box, copy that into your post and your image will appear in your post. Photobucket can also help you to resize your pics so they fit nicely.
Something like this if your on PhotoBucket:

2) Please try to keep images to around 800x600, Photobucket has an auto scaling option to help with this:

Thanks for readying :)

There is a display limit for avatars of 120pixel by 120 pixels.

You can (unfortunately) upload a picture of any size, but every computer in the world that reads your post will download that image then only display it as 120x120.

So, if you can, re-size your favourite shot to 120pixels wide and just let the height stay in the original ratio. Most are about 120x80. Then upload it as your avatar.
<---- This one is 120x110

If you can't re-size a good photo, send it to me at asbestos@ihug.co.nz and I will photoshop it, then send it back to you.

Now and then I trawl through the avatar file (which just shows file number, size and "delete" ), and anything over 100k gets dumped. If I'm bored I sometimes re-size them, then email them out to the person concerned.

When you take the photo, try and get even light on the side of the car you are looking at. Part shadow and part sunlight is going to look crap, as is looking towards the sun! Look at a few of the 300odd avatars on the site and see the mistakes! :D Some are squashed vertically to fit in the 120pixels wide.

...then go and look at Jasestu's! :P

I've just been through & deleted the odd avatar that was half a meg instead of 30kb.

Mostly I could find a post by the member and attach it there, but if your avatar has vanished email or Pm me and I can probably find it.. :P

If you're putting upa new one, re-size it to 120pixels across.

Heres a handy tool that resizes pictures and crops them, suitable for creating avatars,

Ok guys please help me out here!

Just found out that over 90% of our forum space is all from pics being hosted through the forum

I know yes it is harder to host then post pics, but would save me a million hours in going through all the pics and rehosting them for you and saving the club $$$

This is still the one and only forum I know that allows File Attachments, and yes I also do understand that you cant host PDF Files through image hosting sites and that is fine, but gimme a hand and host your pics please :)

Cheers,
Nick

I've been going through and removing old images which were no longer linked to any posts. Still plenty to go through :o
