Title: Installation Of Any 3 Rca Av Device In Your Car
Description: Installed using factory screen/speakers

maximum - July 18, 2007 10:24 PM (GMT)
First off, I want to thank cpufix for his install, since it was his notes that inspired me to go ahead and do this.

While I didn't want to bother with a computer in the car, I did want to be able to play mp3s, and have some kind of interface on the factory screen.

This install cost less than $250, and I now have 80gb of storage for mp3s, movies, and pictures. I can easily upload more media to my car, or plug in another AV device at will if needed.

The ideal device based on my requirements was the mediagate mg-25 Hard drive based media player:

This harddrive based media player allows you to add mp3s, pictures, and movies and play them on any tv via composite video.

Before the HD could be installed, I had to find a way to get video and audio to the factory screen and speakers. Since the TV tuner was of little use to me (since I don't really want to watch tv in the car....), I decided to hijack its video and audio outputs, and put the HD video/audio in their place.

First, I had to remove the panels to get to the tv-tuner:

Once the tv tuner was unbolted, I had a look at the wiring. On the left hand side of the tuner was the aerial plug. No need to worry about that. The next plug had nothing plugged in - so not sure what its for. The third plug was video - luckily, composite. This means theres no need to mess about with rgb + sync. Just two wires - +ve and -ve. The final plug has 12V power (always on), 12V (ac switching), ground, few others, and the left and right audio wires.

It's worth noting at this point that the TV Tuner I have is model number 86010-53020. I think the one that cpufix has is 86010-53010. Not sure if this is a is200/as300 difference, or because my car is a 2001. However the wiring does seem to differ slightly...

-------------
Video input
-------------
Video comes in via two wires - a blue and green wire. Strip back the black plastic tubing around the video wires, and find a white wire containing a green and blue wire. These are composite video + and - respectively. Wire the green to the pin of a female rca plug, and the blue to the outside pin. You now have video on your factory monitor.

-------------
Audio input
-------------
Audio comes via 2 channels (Left and Right) on the right hand side of the largest plug. The four wires in my car are green, white (right +ve, -ve respectively) and red, black (left +ve, -ve respectively). NB - For these wires, I'm not 100% sure about the polarity - sorry about that, I can't remember everything :) So please check with a meter of some sort to verify.

(please excuse the black female video rca - jaycar didnt have any yellow ones, so I just went with black...)

You now have audio out of your factory speakers.

-----------
HD Install
-----------

The final step is to add the HD into the car. The harddrive comes with a remote, which I'm using to control it. I want the HD to be in the boot, along with the rest of the wiring, tv tuner, e.t.c. so I had to extend the infrared sensor on the HD.

I mounted the infrared sensor underneath the bit of plastic that the traction control button is on. Just pull it out, and put it back in with the wire coming out from underneath. The plastic piece will hold the wire in place nicely, and its virtually invisible.

To get power for the HD, I used the AC switching power wire from the far right hand plug (biggest plug) on the tv tuner. I don't remember which wire this is - I'll check and post which one soon. I used a 5v, 2a regulator to convert the 12v to the required 5v for the HD player, and bought a power jack from jaycar so I could unplug the HD player easily. NOTE - these power jacks often have different polarity so check which yours is - usually its on the power pack...

More pictures of the screen in action coming soon...

hey so for this would i need to put in the old factory unit again rather than the new sony one i have?

also.. where about do you live and could you do it for me at a price?

Hi,

I'm not sure about your first question. From what I've read on the boards, it seems that if your remove one part of the system in the altezzas, then you lose everything. However, if your tv tuner still works (i.e. displays stuff on the screen, and has audio) then I don't really see why it wouldn't work.

I'm in West Auckland. I'm not really keen on doing installs for people, since unfortunately my time is valuable, and I can't really justify charging people what I would otherwise earn/hour doing my other job. If you want to give it a go yourself, I'm only happy to help out if you get stuck.

That looks great Rob, and excellent notes for others to follow.

Pleased to hear my notes where of use.

Is the Picture OK ?

I might revist this area to pickup the TV ant for input into a computer TV card.

Cheers

The picture is crystal clear. At first I was getting really weird colours/sync issues when I was trying to figure it all out. Then I realised that the ground I was using was the cars ground, not the video ground.

The tv antenna should be reasonably easy to wire to a tv tuner. It's probably only 2 of those 3 wires that go to the plug...

Yep I've tried the ant in, no work.

I'm now considering Video out from this factory unit to video in on the TV card,
may have problems with Pal and NTSC.

djpaubes - July 20, 2007 05:03 AM (GMT)
Man I took out my factory head unit...

There must be a way to do it with out it? I guess it would need power and a video converter?

Wonder if I could still use the parts from the factory headunit but store it in the boot... sounds like alot of wiring thou...

maximum - July 20, 2007 09:58 AM (GMT)
Well, if you can get audio wires to your existing setup, then all you need is switchable power to the HD. The thing with leaving in the factory headunit is that you get an easy job of doing the audio wiring, and you get to be able to switch the HD on and off using the TV button in the center console.

Otherwise, it shouldnt be too much hassle.

djpaubes - July 21, 2007 11:00 PM (GMT)
where does the monitor draw its power? This sounds like a good little project, I've already got a media player, just need the rest of the wiring, now I need to work out how to get in behind the headunit....

djpaubes - July 21, 2007 11:30 PM (GMT)
also CPUFIX used a video converter? Is that because he was using a computer to convert the output? So I am assuming this method doesn't require it?

cpufix - July 21, 2007 11:48 PM (GMT)
Converter is required for computer to connect directly to the factory screen's RGB connections.
maximum solution can also be used if the computer or device has a TV composite or video out connection and you have the factory Head Unit, and Factory Screen installed.

great stuff.

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 12:36 AM (GMT)

I was just digging in the back of my car trying to find the location of the tv tuner.. I pulled back all the covers on the right hand side thinking it was there.. and nope. I can see the cd drive is it underneath somewhere around there somewhere?

99 rs200z

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 12:46 AM (GMT)
"In the RS200 the tv tuner is in the pillar behind the rear door on the passengers side and also has a mutlisync control box on the passengers side in the boot."

ok back to the garage.. I didnt drink last last so I have energy today :)

cpufix - July 22, 2007 12:48 AM (GMT)
Its the mutlisysnc box that you need to look at.

Skitzso - July 22, 2007 02:27 AM (GMT)
Just to let you know ive just done this with my rs200z and i have the 86010-53010
works fine this stage im just using my video iPod in process of building carputer

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 02:52 AM (GMT)
how do I know what model I have?

Skitzso - July 22, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
cpufix what do you use as a mouse for you computer? ive been lookin at the usb touch pad whats your thoughts

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 03:58 AM (GMT)
ok need some help,

Where exactly in a rs200 is the tv turner box? I think i've confused myself, I expected to see it behind to the right of the back seat passenger??

I've now changed to a LCD touchscreen.
I did try a Wireless Presentation Pointer which I still use when the cars stopped.

Skitzso - July 22, 2007 05:04 AM (GMT)
its in the same place as the pics above but on the passengers side remove the boot lining near the jack you should see the black wiring loom going up to a box thats the tv unit

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 05:15 AM (GMT)
sooo close..

Ok finally found the unit and wired it up and using my video ipod as the source... no love.

Not getting anything on the monitor, the tilt and motor that open and closes it is working ine.

I'm thinking maybe the guys that did my head unit install un powered the monitor?

cpufix - July 22, 2007 05:27 AM (GMT)
Have you selected TV on the head unit.
Check also with handbrake on and off.

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
ahr right I forgot to say I dont have the factory head unit...

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 05:49 AM (GMT)
ok need a new plan of attack then?

Skitzso - July 22, 2007 05:58 AM (GMT)
yeah this was only will work with factory HU you will have to go with cpufix way and use a rgb convertor

Note: this way needs to have ntsc input for it to work fine pal flicters alot

djpaubes - July 22, 2007 07:37 AM (GMT)
ok so if I get the converter what about the factory display? I guess I will have to get in behind and find the wires that go to it. The green and blues wires from the tv tuner do they goto the factory head unit or straight to the TV tuner?

Also any good links to pulling the console off to get in behind my head unit?

I've started and I cant stop now :)

cpufix - July 22, 2007 08:41 AM (GMT)
I suggest slow down, decide what you actually want to achieve, then decide on best way to go about it.

As you don't have the Factory Head unit and basically all you want to do is see videos or similar then an aftermarket unit with screen is possibly what you need.

It will also work ou t of the box and in the long run be a lot cheaper.

1st of i wanted to say thanks to CPUFIX for the nav screen unit. what im doing is hacking the nav screen up and replacing it with a lilliput 7in screen in its place. iv just competed the install of unit into my ride. rewired the screen to power on when you hit the open/close button. took alittle playing around with but every thing is working. now all i need is a computer or dvd unit and just connect the rca cables up with the screen.

cpufix - July 23, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
Send some pics tezza when you're ready, sounds interesting

djpaubes - July 23, 2007 05:36 AM (GMT)
nice work bro,

What did the lcd screen cost you? I've been having a look around trying to find one suitable.

tezzn - July 23, 2007 07:06 AM (GMT)
I bought my screen from Ebay. i reakon its the cheapest place to buy 1. bought a touch screen lilliput 7in. 150 us + 35 shipping.

i had to take the screen apart to fit it in the housing. the screen fit in alrite. i chopped the face to get more veiwing area. was worried about the circuit board though, it fits in but didn't once i put the connector on. i had to angle the board. thought i would damage the board once i place the covers on. there was a lot if tension place on it to seal the housing up.

i pretty much followed the guide from this link. it even has a write up. very useful
http://my.is/forums/f103/pictures-02-nav-h...1-is300-154156/

i noticed that the guys nav screen housing is different from my one. the one he has has a wider viewing area. he also used a different replacment screen. he used a FARENHEIT screen. with the connector facing down. can get them for $89 us from ebay(iv checked). my screen had its connector facing out to the side. so didnt have much room after i placed the connectors on
