Title: Mileages

ldc - October 31, 2007 10:21 PM (GMT)
I have always used BP Ultimate but recent tried Shell V-Power and found that i was not getting the same mileage out of V-Power. I tried V-power due to Ultimate given me rotten egg odor whenever i drive the car hard (when i step it). V-Power seems to not give me this smell.

Before i decide on continuing or not with v-power (as i cannot stand the egg odor), do you guys believe that Ultimate really does give you more mileage as most people say?

It's weird cos with BP mine smells and it doesnt smell with Shell.

It's a hard toss between smell and mileage cos fuel cost is rising :(

ok for me the ones which smell are shell V-Power, Caltex Vortex Gold and sometimes mobil. but yeh i usually use shell V-Power but yeh each person has a different way for accelerating if you have light foot then should be ok.

Not sure if this will work but have you tried resetting your ECU.

Generally that Sulphur like smell is the cat convertor 'breaking in' so to speak, it should only hang around for a few months or so, how many kays have you done?

That smell occured in my IS200 past 100,000kms. It also happens in my IS250 and that is up around the 35,000km mark.

It only occurs when driving hard, but i hadn't paid much attention to if it occured more or less with different fuels.

I try to use V-Power when and where i can, but B.P. is often on my way or closer to me so i usually end up using that.

usually it's due to a dead cat converter or for a new car it;s just the smell of a new cat running in

rotten egg smell? wtf are you all smoking!

BIGW - June 9, 2008 11:03 PM (GMT)
Yeah its a sulphuric smell. I noticed that whenever it revs past 4k or so.

I bought the car from a 70. y.o widow so i doubt it has been thrashed hopefully its just burning in.

Glad im not the only one. Doesnt matter what fuel i use. Optimax, unleaded 95 ultimate ive tried all of them.

Sulfur in the fuel going to H2S I suppose. Hydrogen sulphide has the rotten eggs smell, or rather I should say rotten eggs smell of hydrogen sulphide. It should be burning to SO2.

Ah- confirmation!

ROTTEN EGG SMELL FROM CATALYTIC CONVERTER

The sulphur smell from the exhaust, is actually caused by running the engine/cat convertor slightly lean for long periods and then running under a rich condition (ie going up a hill under heavy load) This is when the sulphur smell (rotten egg) is produced.

Under relatively lean conditions, the sulphur found in gasoline is converted to sulphur trioxide, then during the rich running condition the sulfur trioxide is converted into hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg smell) within the catalytic converter.

Audi of America issued a service bulletin Group 24, #92-04 which detailed this problem. They list the cause as : the gasoline sulphur content and the characteristic of catalytic convertor to store sulphur compounds and release them during rich engine running conditions.

Switching gasoline brands may help. The Oxygen sensor may also need to be replaced to correct a fuel injection mixture problem.

..and this is for Avalons in the USA- Toyota Service Bulletins

I had mine replaced last year. The service manager also told me to use different gas. I do not recall where I saw the tsb, but I copied it and called toyota headquarters usa. They contacted the dealer and the dealer called me to schedule the install.

The tsb is EG039-05. I have a copy of the tsb on my hard drive, but have not seen it on the web.

Basically it says that on a 2005 avalon customers have complained about an excesive sulfur odor. in stop and go driving and heavy acceleration. So, to get this fixed complain about that specifically.

There is a standing tsb EG003-03 which states that sulfur smell is normal and to tell the customer to use a different source of fuel. I think the new avalon tsb is avalon specific and overrides the previous tsb.

What they do is replace an exhaust pipe assembly. The old part is 17410-0P051 and the repair part is 17410-0p050.

It solved the nasty sulfer smell, but my gas mileage paid a price. Probably 3-5 mpg...
