Title: Sat Nav Or Tomtom

Does anyone know how much to get the OEM Sat Nav installed?

I'm thinking of getting a sat nav for my car but wanted to get the oem one, but fear it'll cost too much. Also for those with the Sat Nav, can you get the red light and speed camera detection feature onto it?

TomTom or any other portable Sat Nav will be significantly cheaper than an OEM unit. Not sure if the necessary wiring loom is available in a non Sat Nav IS. If cost is no issue, then anything can be done.

OEM Sat Nav would look the part, however the TomTom allows personalisation. Points of interests can be installed, various voices and languages etc.

Items such as startup and shut down screens can be customised.

Need a MacDonalds or KFC point of interest :P I've got the Shell locations installed as I only use V-Power

Mine is now mounted inside the dash tray (IS200 with the Lexus Sat Nav style dash tray, not the JDM version). Saves having a suction mount on the windscreen.

I think the OEM Sat Nav is factory installed only therefore I doubt you would be able to get it fitted, and like Stephen said even if you could you would be looking at big $$$.

OEM Sat Nav bonus is the fact it comes with the reversing camera aswell.

Im not sure of the dash layout in the new IS250 if you can install an aftermarket double din H/U, but for me the Eclipse AVN6000 H/U was a cheaper option then retrofitting a Lexus GPS system (which I believe is something crazy like $6-7K)

The Eclipse AVN 6000 has a reverse camera capabilities, i pod connectivity mp3 dual dvd drives (you can play dvd's/music while the navigation is on, the music is cut from the drivers side speaker, and the prompts are played through this speaker)

I paid just under $4K for the H/U (with camera option & I pod) but the AVN 6000 H/U has recently had a price reduction, and can be had for $2.2K for the H/U alone (the camera and i pod cable is an extra $700)

Sat Nat has become alot more than just street directing, and the oem unit just doesnt cut it when it comes to all these features. I think the answer lies in that alone. You'd want alot of features in your Sat Nav including playing videos nowadays...

I think i might go with the portable unit, after all you could use it on any car after the life of the Lexus :D

do you already have the in-dash monitor?

if so, i believe that you can buy the satnav receiver unit and plugs right in to the existing montor/system.

Well about your question for installing the OEM nav screen etc into your car its not possible. The sat nav screen etc is a mark levinson item and hence will need re wiring of amps, speakers, seat sensors, sub etc for the whole system to work. May also mean that you might need new steering wheel controls. so yeh its a huge job. So smart choice on getting the tomtom or portable nav unit. But if you really want a larger screen grab a 7" headrest monitor and mount it on the dash board with a carputer in the glovebox complete with GPS installed etc then tap into your existing sound system via either tape or straight into your wiring.

What i've done in my car is put a 7" screen in the dash on the top and then tapped into my sound systems via tape with the wires neatly tucked away and then theres a tv input for my nokia N95 which has GPS mp3/wma/ video abilities. that is one method ofcourse there are plenty of different methods.

should have got the top spec!

i've got a tomtom and its great. I've always got the ugly suction thing on the windscreen but that doesnt worry me. Also means i can lend the tomtom out to friends and use it in cars that aren't mine

tomtom ftw

Yeah good point Charlie, I have destinator software on my PDa (O2 Atom) which has a pedestrian mode, it's quite handy when your travelling interstate walking around in a new city.

I have the GPS software on a memory card and it's a lil slow to load when your use to the dvd base satnav though <_<

Thanks man for the info. I wish i can do all that but it seems i'm not very much into car gadgets etc.

Yeh the OEM sat nav sounds $$$$$

black200, didnt have 20K to spend on top on the Prestige man...besides with 70K? i would have bought an 05 325Ci (with some money to spare too) :P

ldc - January 6, 2008 10:12 AM (GMT)
Oh and there's nothing wrong with the suction thingie on your window, i suppose the only bad thing would be in the Is250 where people would know straight away that you didnt get the top spec with sat Nav. :D

What model is your TomTom?

drjonnz - January 6, 2008 11:28 AM (GMT)
You could do what I did and velcro your Sat Nav to the OEM screen. See:

(Interior picture about 2/3 of the way down the page).

bmalar - January 7, 2008 01:03 AM (GMT)
The Sat Nav is between a $6k - $7k option on the prestige:

But that is factory install when you purchase, i doubt that the will install it now.
