Title: [closed] Figs Hood Gas Strut Kit [1 Kit Left!!!]
Description: replace the annoying hood prop
DR-JEKL - March 17, 2008 10:42 AM (GMT)
Wez recently asked me if I was keen on a DIY gas strut kit.
Well to be honest I don't have the time to bugger around with making one up (even though I enjoy tinkering) when there is already a top quality kit available for around $150 AUD (kits are $155 or $175 AUD shipped to NZ).
If we could get anough numbers we might be able to arrange for half a dozen kits to be sent together to save on shipping costs and get Fig to make em up.
Check out this link:
Figs Hood Prop KitI have dealt with FIG previously and he is a top bloke and his products are held in high regard on the myis forums.

I agree with this. I purchased a kit while I was in the US and they were very helpful.

Well I really doubt they would need to be regassed to after 5-10 years. Most people here would have moved on to a IS250 by then or a lucky select few an IS-F!!! B)

sorry that link isn't working for me. do you have another by anychance?
is there any drilling required?
lexism - March 18, 2008 03:02 AM (GMT)

Looking at the pdf manual, everything is supplied and u use existing holes/bolts which makes it a very clean install. only down side (if u can call it that) is the relay box will need to be unbolted to install the right strut.
smnt - March 18, 2008 03:14 AM (GMT)
i just had a quick look under the bonet. Would you have to unbolt the 1 of the bonet screws to hold it inplace?
other then that there are no other holes avaliable.

Rough idea on weight of the kit? Reason I'm asking is I need to find out how much postage would be from Syd to Melb.
Saito - March 18, 2008 04:19 AM (GMT)
Looks cool....
Read the PDf you linked lexismand look pretty easy to install.
Except that part in the doco where it says "FIGS will not accept returns of improperly stressed brackets due to misalignment"
See how the numbers go on this....

I have emailed Fig he should hopefully have an estimate to airmail 6 hood prop kits to Australia in the next few days.
OK Mike got back to me, he said he will do 6 kits for me @ $125 USD and 10 kits @ $120 USD
yanman - March 19, 2008 08:26 AM (GMT)
Shane, could you possibly give us some payment details (i.e. do we give you the money and how?). Btw, I really appreciate you organising this GB! :D
DR-JEKL - March 19, 2008 10:01 AM (GMT)
No problems it's a pleasure to help you guys out ;)
I just need definite pricing on the shipping from Mike, and then I will get a subtotal and divide that by the number of people ready to buy a kit.
Since it's a long w/e coming up I should have this organised by this time next week.
For anyone else who wants a kit please let me know by next Monday (24/03/08)
1. LExism
2. Me
3. Yanman
4 Nosrab
5. Ballistic
6. SMNT

Also Mike mentioned he has sold these kits for RHD cars in the past, and that he makes a few changes for RHD vehicle kits (he will ensure all the hood prop kits in this group buy are RHD friendly)
DR-JEKL - March 20, 2008 11:06 PM (GMT)
OK guys I have P&H prices now.
Its $20USD per kit based on 10 kits, each kit is $120 USD so the subtotal will be approx $155 AUD per kit airmailed to Sydney.
We need 10 definate buyers before I can place this order.
Please PM me for payment details for those buyers interested and please specify in your PM if you have a carbon fibre hood or oem. (please be aware if you pay today you may still have to wait a week before the order is processed as I need payment from 10 members before placing the order)
For those guys in NZ interested in the groupbuy naturally you will have to pay $155 AUD + P&H to NZ.
Thanks for your interest guys, spread the word so we can get this order underway!
Shane.

Thanks Shane could you find out the postage cost to New Zealand, Nelson 7031, and I will deposit he total asap
yanman - March 24, 2008 12:26 AM (GMT)
Noob question - If you plan on getting a CF hood later, would the CF hood gas struts work on stock hoods or would it be unsuitable? :P

To Be honest I'm not sure.
I would think the differences between a oem kit and cf kit is the struts would be valved to suit the weight I.e a oem kit strut would be valved to hold the extra weight?
smnt - March 27, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
i'm guessing it would fit. the brace monts for the hood are still the same. only difference it'll be lighter with a cf hood.
yanman - March 28, 2008 04:58 AM (GMT)
Hmm.. so it's more of a gentle lift on the cf hood factor. I wonder what happens if you use the normal struts on a cf hood...
DR-JEKL - April 3, 2008 07:44 AM (GMT)
So anyone else up for a kit?!?

I spoke to a CF fabricator and he said that if anyone was to use the OEM kit on a CF hood it would just heighten the risk of simply snapping or damaging the CF hood.

Count me in, I hate the standard one. Had my car for a year now and still find myself looking for the hood prop above the radiator.

I was always under the impression JDM was Japanese domestic market...
LOL it is, I'll just rather think JDM means the dream machine instead hence the smilie and "had to use that"
smnt - April 9, 2008 12:29 AM (GMT)
it is jap domestic market. we need two more people for these struts.
purhapes cookie you could create a thread for those non fast texting people. :D

Heya, I'm keen depending how much it would cost to ship to NZ :) If combined shipping is cheaper, I can actually ship within north island for free once it reaches me!!
