Title: How Lows Too Low..?

Have the teins installed and dropped the car to its lowest settings,

Its sitting at about 605mm to the top of the guards, the rear sits great, no scraping etc but the front may need raising, I just mangled the right guard/lip coming up the drive.

I was thinking about raising it to about 620mm (15mm) at the guards, which would give the front that extra movement as it's sometimes bump stopping over some of the more aggressive lumps in our quality north roads.

So I'm just wondering, what are you guys running with your coil overs? Also keen to know which damper settings are you guys using and what would be the best way to work out the damper, push test? Would too hard a damper be like bump stopping? etc..

Cheers in advance,

I was running 615 F and 620 R with the Tom's Advox coilovers I had.

Just a word of advice (and I'm no pro) but try and take pics with the sun behind you, no matter what you can never get good pics taking them directly into the sun!

The stance looks good! :)

Onion - April 21, 2008 07:45 AM (GMT)
Mines sitting at 615mm front and back. Needs to raised up a bit though, scrapes on almost every speed bump and the rear under chasis brace got caught on a steel one. Bad damage had to gas cut the brace off and cut a hole in the floor to pannelbeat the chasis rail back down. :(

Leiden - April 21, 2008 10:43 AM (GMT)
I bottomed out on the way up my mums driveway and did a bit of damage to one of the side under body braces that run front to back near the jack point lip/sideskirt. It bent it a little, not sure if its going to pass a warrant but Imperial Panel beaters said they fix them all the time so no worries getting it repaired.

I'm going to try 620mm front and rear, I really like the stance as it is but I'm not too keen on bottoming out and mangling my fenders every time I go up my driveway :( And with 19's that bump stopping will probably end up putting my rims out of round!

Too low is when you can't "just drive" your car anymore.... ;)

Spanky69r - April 24, 2008 09:38 PM (GMT)
if its not tucking tyres, its not low enough :) hehe

The front looks like it'd do a bit of scraping at full lock, looks sick though

Barryogen - April 30, 2008 05:34 AM (GMT)
just make sure that the lowest structural point is more than 100mm off the ground, otherwise it's a green or pink sticker depending on how annoying the cop feels like being.

From riding around in a few lowered cars, any lower than about 115mm is a PITA with speed bumps, ramps, driveways etc.

And as for "tucking tires"... maybe in a honda on cut springs, not an altezza... eww.

Spanky69r - May 2, 2008 03:58 PM (GMT)
well id rather see it low than high

MILZ - June 21, 2008 02:46 AM (GMT)
im going to be putting some lowering springs in my altezza,
and just wondering wat everyones advice is on super lows and lows for our cars???
and also which brand is best ???
King or cobra???
thanks

godzilr - June 21, 2008 04:05 AM (GMT)
also, is it true we have rear camber adjust standard on the IS200?

if so, is it enough to adjust it to a safe camber setting with lowered springs in the rear?

Yeah, but there's not much to play with in the adjustment...

hmmm, would you suggest camber bolts?

xnickx - June 21, 2008 09:48 PM (GMT)
When you lower a car, all the arms and all change their alignment, and you will get negative camber automaticly, but the factory alignment bolts can only adjust roughly up to one degree max, if you have stock alighnment and lower to where the wheel is on the guard at the rear, thats going to be roughly -3 camber already

Exactly, so we just have to be prepared to change tyres every 20,000km...

Godzilr- when u say "safe camber" do you just mean no rubbing? I just rolled my guards and that solved everything.

godzilr - June 24, 2008 11:53 AM (GMT)
safe camber so it doesn't scrub the inside of the tyres :D

now that's hawt.
but there is a forum member in sydney that has airbags.. which technically makes his car the lowest possible is200 since it can touch the ground :P

Well, any negative camber will load the inner treads and wear them first, so you 'spread' the wear by adding toe-in.

This wears the outside and across the tread instead of just the inner edge, and obviously the more negative camber you have the more toe-in you need to balance it.

As the car squats it adds more neg camber to the rear and that adds toe-out at the same time, and it is this that the toe-in counteracts. So you need more toe-in for the times you are accelerating or carying a load.

This is the same at the front, except you get more neg camber and more toe-out when you brake and the nose drops. So the times when the tyres are under maximum loading (braking & accelerating) are the times when the wheels assume neg camber and toe-out. Goodbye inner edges!

Overall, more neg camber means shorter tyre life. (and better cornering power!)

i have g4 adjustable coilovers on my is200 and i have 19's on it and im tucking the rears so its just below the top of the rim not tyre but the rim and tucking the fronts just to the top of the rim and its very very low.....its a nightmare driving lol but looks hot as.....at its lowest point underneath its 4cm's (40mm) off the ground :D :D :D ill post up pics soon

Whats the measurement from the front of your front bumper to the ground, and from side skirts to the ground Nick?

My C West front bar is 100mm off the tarmac and skirts are 110mm F & 100mm R (lower ride height in the rear)

all round it's pretty even (and nearly legal), 8-10cm all round, the exhaust is around 6cm and loves the road lol.

QSR-200 - October 16, 2008 10:04 AM (GMT)
ummm yes i expected this sort of reaction on, no offence but there isnt many " sex-spec" style cars here

xnickx - October 16, 2008 10:17 AM (GMT)
"here" being Aus?

LOL Just look in a Hot 4s mag, all have chromes, no smaller then 20"!

My mates one had an S14 with 22s and 4WD stance...

Guess Aus attracts more "Sex-Spec" due to the harsher laws and chances of defects etc.

And "Lexus" is more of a "Cruiser" when compared to its JDM counterpart which is more commonly protrayed as a JDM machine
