Title: Installing A Band Expander
streamz - September 4, 2008 10:39 PM (GMT)
I want to install a band expander on the stock stereo in my RS200. The only thing I am unsure of is how to connect the 12v wire and where I can connect it to. Does it need to be soldered or does it clip or screw in?
Any advice appreciated.

Find the wire that connects to the cigarette lighter and your sweet.
dont do what i did and hook it up to the hazard lights...LOL. every time i had the radio on and a song dropped a heavy bass the lights would flicker in tune ..hahaha it was crazy

Been a bit of discussion on band expanders before, not many people have much joy with them.

Just tap the 12V from any Acc wire behind the headunit or even constant, I would just strip the wire back and solder it in, or alternativly just use a crocodile clip so no soldering or cutting is required

My one was hooked up to the power supply to the amplifier in the aerial base. Makes it real easy as it's right there with the aerial wire

Well, I hooked up the band expander this weekend. I tapped into the 12v to the cigarette lighter.
I am quite disappointed with the sound it seems to be fine when the car is standing still, but driving around the sound is stuttery.
I might just have to bite the bullet and get a new head unit.

I'd suggest trying a different power source first to see if thats causing your problem.
Also I remember a while back when I was working at dse we sold two trypes of band expanders... they had different stepping from memory (been a while) one jumped up 10mhz the other 12.5 mhz which would throw some stations out if you follow what I mean.

I just connected it to the cigarette lighter because it was the only one where I new it was a 12v line. How do you tell what other cables are running 12volts?

Ok, sorted it out. I connected it to the +12v, If I had read the back of the box it said connect to -12v. Works great now.

I'd say new HU :) I got one just so I can play stuff from my iPhone and iPods and any auxiliary as well as straight off a USB stick and SD cards. Yet it only cost me $80
