Title: Painting Brake Calipers
greeneyes - January 9, 2005 01:13 AM (GMT)
The Club now carries the stickers as a stock item, see under "Group Buys". Put $7 in the Club bank account and PM xnickx with your details:
> LINK <This is pretty simple if you have an electric drill and a couple of hours free-
First thing is to clean the caliper with a rotating wire brush in the drill-

When it was all clean and shiny I put a small grinding wheel in the drill and took off the casting ridge that sticks up around the face of the caliper, right where you want to put the sticker...

I didn't get too fussy about masking it. A bit of newspaper & some masking tape, seeing I was only painting the front of the caliper.

With the first coat of paint you realise how much silicon has been stuck in the caliper by those guys at the tyre shop!!
It 'fisheyes' the paint, so it pulls away from the steel in round 'lakes'. The solution is to rub the paint around with your finger as it dries. Once sealed with the first coat the next coat or two go on fine.
I used engine enamel from Repco. Seems to take the heat OK.

One of Frylai's stickers and a couple of coats of CRC Plasticoat finished it off-

Well Done! :) will the paint go into the pad? i saw you paint those calipers without removing your brake pad. :)
greeneyes - January 10, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
Yes it got onto the edge of the pad (where no-one sees)and a bit of overspray on the disc.
Wiped off the first time I used the brakes!
Alee79 - February 1, 2005 10:13 PM (GMT)
do i need to use primer before i spray my first coat of paint?
greeneyes - February 1, 2005 10:36 PM (GMT)
I didn't and the paint still looks good. Maybe because the calipers were wirebrushed very clean with the power drill.
Primer might help with the 'fish-eyes' problem from the silicon tyre spray.

I'd be keen to organise a caliper painting day sometime, if anyone else is keen [only cos i need the help to get my wheels off etc!!!] ;)

As an alterative to spraying you can use this kit (below) that I picked up at Repco for $29.99 - it's heat rated up to 500 degrees

Unlike Greeneyes, I didn't worry about any labour in cleaning. The kit comes with a special cleaner, you simply spray on and clean off with tooth brush - mine were already very clean
Front before Starting

Rear Before Starting

The kit contains masking tape, a paint stirring rod and paint brush - although you might want to use another. I didn't and this one did drop bristles frequently. Simply put 1 thin coat on, leave for 10 to 15 mins and put a second on. I simply jacked up one side of the car, took off both wheels, prep'd and did a coat on each, by the time I was done with one I could move back to the other and add next coat. I put 3 thin coats on.
Mr K - February 25, 2006 06:51 AM (GMT)
Kit says it will last up to 4 calipers ... I think that should say up to 4 CARS ... I used LESS than 1/4 of the tin. Maybe I'll drive it for a few months then clean and do again.
Here is a Before shot (Passenger front)

Here is a After shot (Driver front)

Rear all Done

All Done :)
xnickx - February 25, 2006 02:18 PM (GMT)
shit that looks good MR K, did the paint had to be applied using a brush? Not spraying???
SSML - February 25, 2006 04:06 PM (GMT)
Mr.K. good job! the kit seems to be reasonably priced. even including masking tape...
I think the kit can save a lot of time from masking the car panels/suspensions with newspapers.. just need to mask the immediate surroungings. ;)
cpufix - February 25, 2006 06:19 PM (GMT)
Looks excellent and easy to apply.
Mr K - February 26, 2006 05:21 AM (GMT)
yeah it came with brush...I was thinking you could run it through a spray gun .. but as this paint has a ceramic base I'm not sure if that could clog a spray system.
It goes on very easy and the whole job took roughly two hours...but then I was not in a rush. If I had more time & access to tools (I'm renting, have no garage and toss all space) I'd have taken the calipers off and done a better job.
But yeah...it's come up beautifully ... I've not even bothered with a top clear coat. It'll be interesting to see how shiny they stay.
xnickx - February 26, 2006 10:14 AM (GMT)
thats awsome im so getting that done as soon as my new bumper arrives on tues...:P i gotta prioritise haha
manda - February 28, 2006 11:16 PM (GMT)
are the stickers just vinyl? or are they special heat stuff?
Mr K - March 1, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
apparently just normal vynl will work fine
xnickx - March 1, 2006 01:15 AM (GMT)
Is there anywhere eles we can get these decals from?
I've tried to PM and email slipstream but gotten no reply. or would my best bet is to just go to a signwriter and get some printed off?
Nick
Mr K - March 1, 2006 01:40 AM (GMT)
If someone can get the template made up I can talk to my brother who runs a sign writing place in Tauranga NZ. I'm going to get them to make up some custom ones for me.
If I could get a GOOD shot of the logo I could have him trace that....hmmm
Costs? Pass.... hands up how many interested? You'd have to pay your own freight/Postage
manda - March 1, 2006 06:24 AM (GMT)
if you can make them up let me know il be keen to buy some!
xnickx - March 1, 2006 06:45 AM (GMT)
I'll take some, been trying to get my hands on some.

I can email you some hi-res photos of mine on the car if thats any use?
Also you could try asking Slipstream for a copy of the template file he used.
Mr K - March 1, 2006 08:27 PM (GMT)
I got board at work (don't tell my boss ha ha) so I ended up recreating the Altezza Logo myself :) ... he he he
greeneyes - March 1, 2006 10:48 PM (GMT)
OK- I will organise for the club to carry these as a stock item.
You will be able to buy them by PM to me, and deposit into the club account.
Give me a week to get them organised! (and get a price finalised...!! )
cheers
Keith
Mr K - March 6, 2006 12:04 AM (GMT)
Yeah I just need to work with Greeneyes to tweak the TEMPLATE then send it through to the cutter :) ... hopefully I'll get that sorted tonight
craigb - March 18, 2006 02:37 AM (GMT)
Those of you out there with yellow tezza wanting to paint your brake calipers yellow DON'T buy the paint from Repco as it is not same colour on the box.I went and got some from Supercheap auto EXCELLENT!!!! About 16 bucks a can :D :D
rorz - March 27, 2006 06:23 AM (GMT)
Just finished painting calipers what a difference it makes!! Know the lady so she g did them in chrome vinyl :P So happy with it If anyone wants some let me know can be done
The front:

And the rear:
Jase - March 27, 2006 02:12 PM (GMT)
Damn! Chrome looks good! I only have the white ones...
I went to get some high temperature paint, got home and relised that I couldn't undo the nuts...
The guy who put my mags back on did them up too tight (well at least they are not hell loose! Good job hahah) And the adaptor for the smaller nuts was on the margin of cracking <_<
arghhh my brakes look like shit :(
cpufix - March 27, 2006 08:02 PM (GMT)
They look real neat, good job.
Just a suggestion paint the disc parts ALUMINUM - that is the parts of the disc that
do not get touched by the brake pads.
This gets rid of the rusty parts I can see in your photo.
In NZ Plasti-kote Engine Enamel No 207 Aluminum
Something like this:

Agh getting new rotors put on in the next few weeks
Budgee - May 4, 2006 03:50 AM (GMT)
Greeneyes, did you manage to get some of those caliper decals for Club Stock? Keen for a set if poss.
Any suggestions for colour too... car is BR Green
Yep! They are in stock now.
Put $7 in the club bank account (see here ) and send me your address, & I'll mail a set out. White only...
Cheers- Keith
Nico - May 4, 2006 05:00 AM (GMT)
I would also be keen to buy a set of white decals if there are some available...
TLW - May 4, 2006 05:13 AM (GMT)
Hiya Budgee,
My cars mica green too (I'm guessing that's what you mean by BRG ;) )
I'm going to paint my calipers black....eventually, and use white decals. Anything else may look a bit crass (red looks great with other colours - I have factory red calipers on my other car)
Cheers
Tania
xnickx - May 4, 2006 07:00 AM (GMT)
Yes he still has somemore if I'm not wrong, they only come in white and only cost $7. :P They look really neat!
Nico - May 4, 2006 08:25 PM (GMT)
I also plan to paint mine black, with white decals. Red just wouldn't suit I don't think ;)
Altezza Girl - August 30, 2006 09:17 PM (GMT)
What would anyone suggest as a clear coat for the top layer for the calipers?
Couldn't find anything at SuperCheap yesterday that would handle the heat.
The car is up on axel stands half completed, cant wait to see it all finished :D
cpufix - August 30, 2006 10:17 PM (GMT)
Suggest don't worry about the clear coat. I've not put a clear on mine and they
still look good after several months.
greeneyes - August 30, 2006 10:32 PM (GMT)
I used CRC Plastikote, which is not heat-proof at all but has not degraded.
I don't think the calipers get hot at all. The brake pads are excellent insulators and then the heat has to get through the pistons, into the oil, not boil the oil and heat up the caliper...
I've probably got some left if you want to pick it up-
LXTASY - August 31, 2006 12:18 AM (GMT)
Im suprized you couldnt find heat-proof clear at supercheap cause thats where i got mine from. it really doesnt matter whether you have it or not though cause the only thing it does is make it a bit glossy thats all. im finding now though with my stickers under the clear that its started to go a tiny bit brown where the clear goes over the white letters. dunno whether its just dirt or whether its brake dust affecting it....
craigb - August 31, 2006 06:03 AM (GMT)
Hiya Diane. Did you get the yellow brake caliper paint from Supercheap?
