Title: Turning The Gearlever Around
Description: from hitting the handbrake
greeneyes - January 12, 2009 01:41 AM (GMT)
When they fitted my TRD flywheel/clutch they put the gearlever back 180deg out, so it hits the handbrake when getting reverse. They said to bring it back & they would swap it, but I never got around to it until today after i noticed it is marking the handbrake.
These photos were taken as I re-assembled it, so the angle of the gearlever is already leaning to the right, whereas when I stripped it the angle was quite vertical.
Make sure you have a clean rag with you!
Step 1- Unscrew the gearknob & pull the leather boot/plastic tray vertically up and out.
Step 2- Undo the four bolts and two screws to loosen the holding plate. This comes loose but does not need to be taken out. Remove the round rubber cover up over the gearlever.

Step 3- This reveals the NEXT rubber cover, which is removed the same way.

Step 4-and this reveals the THIRD rubber cover, the very small one.

Step 5- remove the four bolts and lift out the gearlever.

It locates onto two pins, one coming in from each side. All you have to do is turn the gearlever around 180deg and put it back... Actually, it takes quite lot of fiddling to get it to go back in properly without forcing anything, and this is where you need the clean rag!

Reassembly is the reverse, and suddenly it goes nowhere near the handbrake in the reverse gate-

and it sits over to the driver's side in neutral-

I like the gear knob :P
Had the same problem when I reinstalled mine, its a pain in the ass to get it back in, that little plastic cover on the ball joint just loves going crooked doesn't it...

Haha- yeah Ashara's donor 'rolla didn't have a gearknob, so we went down the wrecker and she liked that one. Then we tried the Altezza one in her KE70 & of course it fitted...

Hey, this is a slightly off-topic question but is the gear knob meant to lean towards the drivers side? I see a few like that whereas there are others that sit perfectly centered?
Thanks
EDIT: Oops, didn't realise this thread was a few months old xD

Mine sits centre at 3rd and 4th, you have to move it to the left to get 1st & 2nd, then to the right for 5th and 6th
It looks like it sits slightly towards the drivers side in neutral

Err now I confused myself.

Are you confused by my question? If so, maybe these pics will help?
Are they meant to be the top or bottom one or does it not matter? As you can see top is angled towards right whereas bottom looks perfectly centered. I believe they're also both in neutral.

This is my one in neutral.

Yes, and I believe the bottom one is in backwards. It will hit the handbrake when you select reverse.

So by default they are meant to lean towards the right?
greeneyes - May 8, 2009 04:03 AM (GMT)
Yes, because they move further to the left to get gears than they move to the right.

Not to mention that we sit on the right side of the car so it kinda makes sense. My old '87 Corolla sat off to the right side, the same as my stock Altezza shifter did.
You should post a question on the TM auction asking if it hits the handbrake. I put mine in backwards once and didn't realise til I had it all patched together because it looks about normal.

You've been out there checking for ages...
I put mine in around the wrong way when I did the clutch, it looked ok, and sat upright, but it moved way to far to the left

I'm assuming that as per usual our gear knobs just unscrew? If so, it seems like some bastard has gone and put loctite on the threads of mine <_<

I checked... saw that it was in the middle and did not seem to hit the handbrake... then decided to drink to contemplate on this. Have not come to any great insights yet.

nah, they are hard to get off the first time, don't try and unscrew using the chrome part, its just glued onto a plastic/rubber ball...
