Title: Top Tyres That Have Saved Lives

2OLD4RBDET - March 6, 2009 08:29 AM (GMT)
the best tyre i have driven is Goodyear Eagle F1, the German made ones. Put potenza to shame and wear ok on S15 Type R.

Second best is actually a cheap ass tyre called Accelera. They are a bargin for bang for buck.

What tyres do yoyu guys recommend??

DR-JEKL - March 6, 2009 09:42 AM (GMT)
I have heard a lot of good things about the goodyear F1's although I could never find a good price on them.

I have found pirelli's to be overrated, and the best tyres I have had are the michelin pilot sports :)

-DC- - March 6, 2009 09:47 AM (GMT)
My car came with 225 eagle f1's on them, and yes they handled like a dream. however, yes, the price on them is quite over the top, and due to the soft compound, they also wear a bit faster. personally, the next best for handling in my opinion have been Toyo T1R's. similar to eagle f1's they do have a soft compound, but pricewise much more affordable to replace  I think it was almost $100 price difference between the 2 tyres in 235 size. Also had grid3's and MY01's in the past, neither compare with the Eagles or T1R's :)

xnickx - March 6, 2009 11:02 AM (GMT)
My Pirelli P Zero's were shit!

Found Goodyear Eagle F1s ok except the road noise

Toyo T1Rs or Dunlop DZ101s are probably the top of my list.

However saying that I've now got Firenza's (!?) on my car and they seem to grip bloody well wet or dry!

black200 - March 6, 2009 03:42 PM (GMT)

michelin pilot preceda 2 is the best i've ever used.

well, aside from the re55's

Federal 595s are the best bang for buck tyre out there

Barryogen - March 6, 2009 07:51 PM (GMT)
Have put DZ101's on my last 4 cars... seem to be in the sweet spot money wise for 215/40/17s, although want a bit more tire on the rear of the tezza...

*Barryogen makes new thread.

lonestar - March 6, 2009 08:57 PM (GMT)
I have Good year F1 Eagles and find them pretty good.

xero - March 6, 2009 09:26 PM (GMT)
Don't laugh, I have these GT radials on my car, am yet to unstick them... seem to be wearing good also...

But still Toyo's best for the money.

crazyeyes - March 6, 2009 10:39 PM (GMT)
Currently have eagle f1s (china made ones after i had a look from another thread) .

I am very pleased with them at the moment.

I got a set through Tonys around christmas time 2 years ago and kept them for a rainy day. (good specials around christmas if you have budgeted right). They were trying to get rid of them and at the time i didnt know about china vs germany made ones. I cant tell the difference. My friend also has them on his legnum and is pleased as well.

I have also had a second hand set of direzzas which i was really pleased with and if a deal came up I would most likely buy these. Even being a second hand tire and giving it heaps it still held up well and was really impressed.

avoid Champriaros or whatever the death tire is called at all cost.

doesnt stick at all, sides melted, jelly like with rubber down the side of my car everyday. lasted 6months. (partially because when i bought the car i think they lowered it and slapped new tires on it with no alignment)

-DC- - March 7, 2009 12:05 AM (GMT)
from what i've been told about the chinese and german eagle f1's, the compounds are very very similar but the chinese ones have like 1-2mm extra tread from brand new. however they wear slightly faster. i dont know how negligible the wear speed is, but i heard there is very little performance difference in terms of road use :)

i can only expect the chinese ones to be cheaper to buy due to manufacturing costs and shipping from china rather than germany.. I'd trust them to have a fairly high standard of quality check, but personally if i'm gonna go for top notch tyres (and paying top dollar), i'd stick to the german ones though..

oh and yes, direzza dz101's are also very good :) the wearing characteristics is similar to the eagle f1's and toyo t1r's though (but hey, performance outrules economy, right? lol)

turbo tezza - March 7, 2009 01:14 AM (GMT)
I have to go with the Eagle F1 also.

Had 2 sets - first set was sold on the standard rims when I got rid of them.

2nd set are still on the car. Picked up a set for $900 for 225/40/18 from mag & turbo - just had to wait awhile for the price to come down. They retail at about $300 each.

They are the best tyres I have driven. Had yokahama A539 on my WRX. They were ok but nothing special.

Corey

Barryogen - March 7, 2009 02:28 AM (GMT)
-DC- actually makes a good point.

performance does outweigh economy... at least for my tire purchase.

I'd rather have a sticky tire wet and dry, and shell out a bit more often than to have one that may not give me the grip I expect, and last longer than the car if you know what I mean.

madaltezza - March 7, 2009 03:22 PM (GMT)
my pick is toyo t1rs i have had Eagle F1s pn one of my old cars they only lasted 12000km then i swiched to the old toyo t1s then when the t1rs came out i ended up with them and have never looked back

greeneyes - March 7, 2009 09:25 PM (GMT)
I often run two different pairs, currently Toyo T1R and Falken FK452.

This gives me the chance to try the brands against one another and swap front to rear to get the handling I want.

No difference in feel between those two sets, the first time I've ever found that!

That's the third or fourth pair of Toyos on the car now, I reckon they are the best overall value I've found-

how about Nankangs?

LEX-71C - March 9, 2009 01:25 AM (GMT)
if you have camber , Pirelli P Zero are the best... they have a harder compound on the inside to minimise camber wear.. in my opinion they are worth the extra $$ you pay..

How about Nankang Tyres? I just bought a whole set last Friday, cost me $575 incl GST for four Nankang NS2 Ultra Sport, fitting, balancing and wheel alignment and free rotation for the life of the tyres. I had Firestone Firehawks on before but Nankangs are way better in handling and so much less road noise.

Oh and thanks to XNICKX for those caliper stickers managed to paint the calipers in put the stickers on as well.

MEEAOW - March 9, 2009 07:30 AM (GMT)
i have those nankangs, not toooo bad but do find them a bit slippery in the wet ;)

-DC- - March 9, 2009 10:00 AM (GMT)
yeah, nankings are pretty bad in the wet imo. they're not horrible tyres, but personally, i would spend the extra and go toyo t1r's. they're on a completely different world to ns2's ;)

jeremyflower - March 10, 2009 08:24 AM (GMT)
I have Toyo Trampios on the rear of my car, they're fine until it rains then your car suddenly feels incredibly powerful... massive, uncalled for drifts around corners when you release the clutch from 1st to 2nd too quickly. Glad I didn't pay full price for them.

The Eagles I have on the front are definitely pretty incredible tyres though.

i actually have to change a couple of mine and was thinking of changing to something else... just find it too unsafe i dont like them in the wet haha.

d3gnarts3 - March 10, 2009 10:31 AM (GMT)
I brought my car with Eagle F1's on it and when I had to get two more I stuck with em.

Now I need to replace two more so again I've requested they get Eagle F1's in as they don't usually stock that kind of tire here on Waiheke Island...

Oh and I have the China made ones and they are still great, give excellent road handling and I can throw my car around corners wet or dry and it just sticks!

When I had to get two new tires for my WOF over a year ago I moved the two from the rear to the front and put the new ones on the rear and got over two years of driving out of them.

Just gotta keep the tire pressure up and treat them nicely to ensure you get your money's worth at the end of the day.

JIMKRAZTEZA - April 10, 2009 10:32 PM (GMT)
i have bridgestone tyres on at the moment and it kinda feels like skid rims too me in the wet n kinda makes not wanna drive in the rain...

what do people think about hankooks?

Don't laugh, I have these GT radials on my car, am yet to unstick them... seem to be wearing good also...

But still Toyo's best for the money.

I have GT Radials on mine aswell.

I used to have Kingstars ( they were new on the car when I bought it ) and I would NEVER use them again! You go to accelerate out of corner and they ass end of the car was all over the show! It was like I didnt have the traction control on. The chick reckoned she spent $800 on them. My GT Radials cost me $660 for 4 new and I havent had any problems.

My money is on Toyo tho! Just couldnt afford to buy them at the time :P

E910 - April 14, 2009 09:59 PM (GMT)
Mine came with Pirelli P7000 on the front & Kumho Ecsta Supra 712 on the rear. The Kumho's are fun in the wet but don't give you a lot of confidence at open roads speeds when you hit a twisty section & its raining. Bang for buck they're not bad especially if you're on a budget. I'd take them over any of the cheap Chinese rubbish like triangle & linglong etc. Hyper has them for $139 in our OE size.
I will need new tyres for my next WOF. I'm looking at Dunlop Sport Maxx as I can get them cheap through work.

*EDIT*
I ended up getting Bridgestone Potenza RE001. They're awesome value for money. I take back what I said about the Kumho's being alright tyres. They're rubbish in comparison.

JIMKRAZTEZA - August 4, 2009 11:20 AM (GMT)
Just bought some federals and i must say that im pretty impressed with them well they are a million times better than my bridgestones playaz but i hear that they are about the same as the federals that i bought today :S

any one have any ideas?

jtm_usa - August 4, 2009 05:54 PM (GMT)
i must say after a bad near crash expiriencewith my old GT Radials and some other rando firestone tyres my investment of $800 into 4 new tyres paid off.
it was a toss up between the goodyear eagle f1's and toyo t1r's after searching around and finding out that most of the eagle f1's nowadays are made in china and no longer germany i decided to jump @ a special price hyper.co.nz had and got the t1r's and man what a difference they made.
i will be buying nothing more in the future
they're superb in the dry , give a fair amount of feedback and whine before they let go and when they do its controlable. in the wet they are something else. id be willing to say they're just as good in the wet as they are in the dry. for the first 6ish months going round roundabouts in the wet they just wuldnt let go ! not even a budge which was amazing to me. i just feel a lot more secure knowing i have good rubber which wont suddenly let go and spin me out of control when they're at the limit and are quiet and comfortable on the daily commutes :)

MEEAOW - August 4, 2009 11:51 PM (GMT)
yea I have just replaced my two fronts with toyos (long story, had to get rid of two tyres that both had enough tread to last me a lifetime ) , seem to be much nicer than the nankangs!! Haven't got to drive in the wet yet though, that will be the big test for me. They were expensive but I don't mind paying money for decent tyres because they really do make such a difference!

tikboy2007 - August 5, 2009 02:23 AM (GMT)
so what's the best tyre for:

1. performance?

2. everyday use

looking to get new tyres soon still have reasonable tread though

id say try the toyo t1r's or the dunlop direzza's
ive heard nothing but good things about both / had expirience with the toyos
and they're resonably priced for what you get
my next set might just be the direzza's or my trusty toyo's ! :P
