Title: Stupid Chatter
Description: 6MT RS200

Ever since I've installed the ORC Clutch / Flywheel I've noticed that theres a chatter from somewhere in the engine / gearbox. Only happens at idle when it drops a little low before recovering (usually when radiator fans engage) or it comes and goes in about 20 sec intervals on a really hot day and the motor is idling below 750rpm.
Dont think its the thrust bearing, because it still does it when holding slight pressure on the clutch pedal. It appears to dissapear completely when clutch is disengaged (hard to hear over the Ogura rattle though)
Only other thing I could think of is the motor (pretty sure it was there before the new big end bearing went it) or something in the gearbox,
I remember when I had the thing apart there was alot of play in the input shaft, not really forward/back but more up/down/left/right, this is suposed to sit in the little bearing in the flywheel but what holds it in place on the other end? A bearing in the gearbox?
If that bearing was worn would it make that kind of chatter, or would that be more the input -> layshaft gears moving around slightly (its getting old, 150,000km+)
Any simple way to fix it... not that its a problem, pushing the clutch pedal in is enough to make people think somethings broken...

Idle chatter is just a normal characteristic of our gearbox :P

Oh yay, I'll just get over it :P, least I dont have to worry thinking its my motor dying a painful death.

It could be the teeth chattering back and forth on the next gear when they're not under load. Perhaps the rate of rotation varies according to compression & firing within each cycle, so the contact swaps from one side of the tooth to the other.
Maybe its the bearing balls making the noise as they rotate with a little play in there.
Mine does it too, most of them do I think. Embarrassing when the motor is idling and you have the driver's door open!

What type of orc clutch is it? Single or multi plate?
Leiden - April 8, 2009 05:59 AM (GMT)
Single plate, Rated to 300PS & 450NM Torque
Its the type that rattles when you depress the pedal, floating disc or something
@Greeneyes: At first I thought it was the dual mass clutch, but It seems to be louder with the solid flywheel... my dual mass was farked. That spring it dampens on looked like it was about half of what it was meant to be letting the clutch facing hemisphere rotate freely about 45 degree's before hitting the spring

welcome to aftermarket clutch town! population: you
nice choice of clutch too, i'd do the twin plate thing myself but that is just me. Either way ORC ftw

Yea its a good clutch, $300 all up for it including flywheel. A bit of a pain in traffic, I think it might be ceramic or something, really hard to ride but I've got it sussed now :P
