Ok so you were driving along it shuddered made a clunk and stopped?
Then did you try to restart it?
Did you get it towed home?
If your timing belt has broken, perhaps all you can do is think positive and use it as an excuse to put in a 1/2JZ transplant!!
sydneyis200 - April 22, 2009 10:18 AM (GMT)
How many Kms have you done and how old is the car?

from what i know, if the timing belt is cracked, it will lead to some internal engine problem, i think the only way is to let a mechanic to have r look and get it fix
xnickx - April 22, 2009 11:10 AM (GMT)
Damn not another one!
Firstly sorry to hear!
Ditto, if the belt has snapped you will need to get the valves etc checked to make sure they haven't been damaged like what happened to Noel's 3SGE in Ireland.
If nothing has been damaged you can get away with just the cambelt, 2 tensioners and the waterpump.
If its worse, you gotta consider:
Engine gasket kit (head will come off to replace the valves etc)
cambelt
tensioners x 2 (hydraulic and manual tensioner)
waterpump
valves (12 x inlet and 12 x exhaust)
thermostat
fluids
labour
Could lead up to be a good $2000+ job!
Fear not, if you need parts don't be afraid to let me know and I'll do my best to look after you :)
@ndrew - April 22, 2009 11:43 AM (GMT)
Are these interferance engines ? I used to work on the odd MR2 and they are non interferance 3SGE/3SGTE engines so always thought they were the same
Stephen - April 22, 2009 12:07 PM (GMT)
The Toyota G family were non-interference engines except the VVT-i version in the IS200 (1G-FE) which is an interference engine :(
DR-JEKL - April 22, 2009 12:26 PM (GMT)
Get a reputable mechanic too look at it, and get a quote, otherwise ring around for a 1JZ front cut B)
Sorry to hear mate!

PM Charlie (black200) he should have a spare 1GFE.
pras - April 22, 2009 11:15 PM (GMT)
I think Brian J still has his old 1g-fe as well. You'd have to PM him through JDMST thou and you might have a chance to get to him.

hopefully it's ignition barrel. i've had that in my other car where it simply stops and dosen't turn back on!
did the rpm's go crazy just as it was about to turn off?

It's already been identified as a broken cambelt.

Gees only 80,000 Kms - wonder what made that happen.
I'd try my luck with Lexus even though its out of warranty.
Try Indy at ISMR - Ph: 9599 9918 or even Brett from ASA but he might have too much on his plate (worth a try).

Get a belt fitted, just a belt and nothing else. Any mechanic should be abe to manage it- did the mobile guy quote you for that? Have him report on the state of the tensioners, their bearings will rumble or growl if they are worn.
Then get the compression checked on each cylinder and those figures will tell you if the valves are bent.
If the valves are bent then its time to lift the head & replace whichever valves are bent. A quote for that can be measured up against a replacement motor.
If the compression figures are fine then thats the job over!
You can replace the tensioners if they sounded bad when the mechanic put the new belt on at this stage, its no good putting new tensioners on a motor that you might throw out.
..and WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS!!! :P

Whats the definition of a new motor?
Sounds reasonably priced to me!

Well, I'd get someone to check the compressions and see how many cylinders are suffering.
...or you could pull the head off and have a look.
But you can't really decide between fixing this one or replacing it without some comparison prices, and you might only have two cylinders with bent valves.
$2k for a dropin motor is OK, it will be straight out of a wreck or from someone who has replaced their motor with a 2J.

Good news that the turn around time was pretty quick to get an engine in.
In saying that have you got a blue slip for the new engine?
