Title: Castrol Epx 80w90
Description: Please Advice
qualezza - June 16, 2009 12:51 PM (GMT)
Hi Guys, need some advice on this Castrol EPX 80W90 oil. It says I can use it on gearbox as well as the diff. So I bought a 4 litre gallon to service my car this weekend. Would like to know your opinions. The car has only done around 17k kms since I last changed all the fluids.

Its a GL5 oil so what ever you do, DO NOT put it in the gear box!! Only use GL4.
If I was you I'd get a credit on it. You only need 1L for the diff & there's better oil out there you could be using IMO like a fully synthetic.
For the gear box the only oil that I've found at a reasonable price that meets the OE specs is
RedLine MT-90. I'm running it in mine & can't recommend it highly enough.

I'll be changing to MT-90 soon, I used VMX on my last gearbox oil change and downshifts to 1st and upshifts to 2nd wen cold has gotten a little notchy, also noticed a little more gearbox whine that never used to be there before the oil change,
I don't abuse the gearbox due to it being weak, so no launches, standstills, or WOT shifts, so I'm thinking its probably the oil or my broken engine mount.

Where can we find this magical Redline oil and how much does it cost?

BNT sell it. From memory its about $39 per quart retail. I can get it at trade if anyone wants to save themselves a few bucks. BNT's part number for it is RL134-1 if that helps anyone.
*EDIT*
Found another alternative, Amsoil 75w90 GL4. It's available in NZ from http://www.syntheticoil.co.nz/
A good site I found about oil http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/index.php

Thanks for the info guys, I guess I will go to Super Cheap Auto tomorrow morning and see if they will return it. So MT-90 would be best for the gearbox, what about the diff?

I went into the local Supercheap today and they didn't have MT-90, its a special order only item aparently :(

That's because
BNT are the NZ distributors for it.
You're in
Whangarei aren't you? They've got a branch in Clyde St. That must be down by Arthurs Emporium somewhere wouldn't it?
For the Diff 85W90 GL5 is recommended but you can also use 80w140 for a bit more protection. Use a fully synthetic oil either way.

I've heard about that place (despite never being to Whangarei). From what I hear, he'll probably have MT90 - doesn't he have some of absolutely everything?

Haha I might check it out, could also look for some decent mesh to install on my MAF sensor to make the airflow more laminar

BNT sold me some 75w90 GL5 Redline diff oil 4 my non lsd 2001 rs200 altezza, I know its not the 85w90 or the shock stuff but apparently Redline don't do that grade?, I'm assuming that it"ll work fine in my diff?

I use Redline lightweight shockproof in my diff and gearbox. I realize that it will eventually glaze my synchros, however in the meantime the shift is much improved. I have MTL to put in to clean the synchros when they start misbehaving.

I've put MT-90 in my gearbox too and the difference is incredible, smoother shifts and quieter operation. That being said, the oil I took out may well be the original oil that the car was sold with... I have no way of knowing.
xnickx will do you an excellent deal on TRD LSD diff oil, as long as you're a VIP member, that stuff makes a huge difference too and it's painfully expensive retail...
