Title: Whats The Gearbox In Is200/is300?
PeppeX - June 19, 2009 08:33 AM (GMT)
I was just wondering whats the gear box in the is200 and is300? Also are they any good? I am choosing between buying a supra and a is200/is300, but i was just wondering if they had the same gearboxes.
Also is more difficult to change a gear box or an engine? Cos if i was to get a is200 i would change the engine and if i was to get a is300 i would have to change the gear box to manual.
But then the supra comes into the picture, if the supra gearbox is better than the is200/is300 and it has the engine i want, it would be a better idea to get a supra.

Depends on which gearbox you want, the 6 speed manual is the J160 which isn't fantastic, what are you looking for in a car? whats your budget? and do you have any problems swapping an engine or gearbox? the IS300 only has the 2JZ-GE and if you really want to go fast then you want the 2JZ-GTE turbo setup which you find on the supras. do you want to keep your car fully legal or are you willing to get it possibly defected for you to have the setup you want?
PeppeX - June 19, 2009 01:19 PM (GMT)
I'm looking for a speedy easy to modify and sexy looking car :P
My budget is probs 20k decent stock car and probs get upgrades as i go along.
Couldnt i just turbo charge the 2JZ-GE? People say custom kits are better than the 2JZ-GTE stock. But yeah 2JZ-GTE will be more hassle free as i dont need to source out a turbo kit.
LOL what are you thinking thats "illegal"?
Do u own a is200? Is the stock gearbox that bad lol? Maybe i should get a supra then... But then my insurance would sky rocket like a bitch, even if it is under my parents name :(
PS i'm a P plater so no turbo for now, but i want to get something i can upgrade in the future :)
xnickx - June 19, 2009 07:32 PM (GMT)
If your a P-Plater, get an IS300, convert it to manual using a JZA80 Supra (non turbo 5MT) gearbox, the W58 Remote shift, or a R154 Remote shifter behind the 2JZGE, do suspension upgrades etc then when your off your Ps, turbo the 2JZGE.
However if you want decent power you will need to pull it all apart and get forged bits and pieces
Leiden - June 19, 2009 09:14 PM (GMT)
I read that the 2JZGE's are just a higher compression 2JZGTE and lack oil squirters to cool the piston, otherwise the internal components are just as strong!
PeppeX - June 19, 2009 10:21 PM (GMT)
Ok, so is the 2JZGE just as good as the 2JZGTE? But wouldnt changing from auto to manual gearbox be harder than a engine? Umm... Maybe i should import a manual is300 :D
But then i was thinking, why dont i just get a is200 and play around with it for a bit then when i am off my Ps, i put a 2JZGTE in and change the gearbox? Does this sound like a better option?
Leiden - June 19, 2009 11:06 PM (GMT)
Pretty much, if you look over at the my.is forums there's plently of Forced Induction IS300's around and bolt on kits are readily available (more so than a RS200 turbo kit these days)
PeppeX - June 19, 2009 11:45 PM (GMT)
Yeah i've been looking over there, but it seems like alot of ppl with the is300 is still doing a engine swap to 2JZGTE whys that?
But the is300 is a auto and changing the gearbox will be a bitch!
Leiden - June 20, 2009 01:30 AM (GMT)
Changing a whole motor, wiring, and driveline will be more of a bitch my friend ;)
I'm not sure for there reasons but they're probably craving more power or are getting paid too much!
http://forum.clubna-t.com is another good place to do some research :)

Save and search around to find an imported altezza with 3sge motor. They come along from time to time.
Will be a lot more rewarding to own until you can have a turbo, and by then you'll have different priorities anyway.
Any kind of turbo/ engine / gearbox upgrade is not for the feint hearted.
eldan89 - June 20, 2009 05:08 AM (GMT)
If your looking for outright power don't buy an is200/300, look elsewhere. If your looking for a car thats fun to drive buy a manual is200. Sure it may not be quick, but its hella fun to drive on a twisty road. Rather than spend money on illegal power modifications, spend it on handling mods. You'll learn to get the best from the car and that will make you a better driver in the long run.

Umm, i am actually really interested and i am eager to learn. I wouldnt mind being a mechanic apprentice for a while and learn everything there is to cars, so i can DIY everything in my car :)

I like ur thinking :), but i am sure all guys crave some power to their car. If i had an is300 manual i think i would be really satisfied with the power and just do some handling mods
I still cant give up on buying an is200 yet. I love it too much! except for the gearbox and engine lol :P

would the supra gearbox fit nicely in an RS200?
instead of getting J160 for my manual conversion can I jus source a supra gearbox?

Which gearbox are you talking about? The 5 speed or the Getrag 6 speed? Unless your chasing a massive amount of power I'd just stick with the J160 box. Its a perfect fit and is close ratio to suit the high revving engine.
For all intensive purposes there is nothing wrong with the J160 box. Its just not designed to handle big power, but in its own right its a nice gearbox to use.

Eldan do u own an is200? I read that a stock is200 only has 85rwkw, thats pretty shocking :(. Have u modded ur is200 (i am assuming u have one since u seem to know alot about it :P)

I sure do own an IS200, in fact its the second IS200 that I've owned. I used to have an auto one but it was too boring for my liking so I upgraded to a manual one. In terms of modifications its stock engine wise but its had some decent handling mods done to it, such as brake and suspension upgrades. Its not that quick 85-90rwkw but it really is fun to drive. If you work the close ratio gearbox and keep the engine revving its not that bad.
Have you test driven one yet? If I were you I'd take one for a spin and stop worrying about power figures and numbers. Its not about the power in an is200, its about the way the car drives. If your looking for something to burn off at the lights in get a Holden or Ford.
P.S are you in aus?

Dude, I soooo hope you have a licence and significant driving experience.
Cos to make statments like that ^, would make you look like a quite the fool (and a rude one at that) if it turned out you were on here instead of doing your homework.
IS200's are a rewarding drive that respond well to minor mods. Its not all about rwhp. Go drive one, and compare it to your extensive experience, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Well said...

Ill have to take a ride in a is200 some time, i only ever hear bad things but its usualy unhappy people that post about being unhappy.
Im guessing that a stripped out stock is200 would probably take down my fat 300 on a track... maybe ;)

I'm not so sure about the power or anything. The situation is that i have an RS200 and want to convert to MAnual. I'm in Melb and therefore there aren't many altezzas and hence cant find any J160 gear box at all. Just thought it might be an easy and more exconomical way out but throwing in a supra gearbox. So doesit actually fit?
Any other suggestions guys?

I will surely take the is200 for a drive
Law910, is200 use J160 and it wont fit a supra gearbox (V16x), if u were to get a supra gearbox u will need to get a engine change too ;)
How old is ur is200? Maybe u should just sell it off and get a manual version like eldan89 did |
Law910 doesn't have an is200, he has a genuine altezza with the 4 cylinder beams engine in it. Its a rare car which is why he wants to keep it, buying a manual is200 would be a downgrade from that car.
So please stop talking about things you don't know about as it makes you sound like a fool and clutters up the forums.

The head on the auto RS200 is different to the manual as well.
