Title: Tiptronic Conversion?
jtm_usa - July 9, 2009 11:53 AM (GMT)
Is it possible to do a conversion from tiptronic to manual in an rs200?
if so how much would the conversion cost roughly?
just curious since im getting a bit bored with my auto box :P
also; do all tiptronic rs200's in manual mode go :2 3 4 D ? why isnt it 1 2 3 4 5? so annoying ! i want to get into 1st ! and when i switch from 4th to D , the D gear seems to be 2 damn gears , or atleast acts like it. frustrates the heck outa me sometimes lol

mine only goes down to 2, I asked that question also and apparently it's normal!! I find once it's in D if it doesn't like the way you are driving it just takes over (or if I forget to change down gears when stopping and starting it will do it anyway). I really only use tiptronic on the hills, it's soooo good for that!! :D

Conversion is possible, your looking at spending about $1500-$2000 for a conversion including parts if you do most of the labour yourself.
You'll need:
- J160 Gearbox
- Clutch/Flywheel/Clutch Fork/Release Bearing/Slave Cylinder
- Manual Driveshaft (Pretty sure you'll need one)
- Pedal Box with Master Cylinder
- Interior Trim
- Optional: Torsen LSD from 6MT
Here's most of a conversion kit for $1000:

i suppose thats not too bad.
i dont really have any expirience with mechanics at all , but would it be hard to install with an altezza manual and possibly my dad who knows a fair bit ? lol i know mechanics charge a lot and im not too keen on paying a whole heap of money for labor, so if its possible to do myself id be willing to give it a shot.
-also, would i need to replace the tiptronic dash layout?
do you think it would be cheaper to try and source the parts from a wrecker?
or would that be too dodgey/pricey?

Generally its a bit of a bolt bits together affair, if your dads mechanically competent then you should have no problems. An engine manual would help, but you can look on Toyodiy.com to see how things bolt together.
Once the mechanical side of things is complete you just need to bridge the neutral contacts for the Auto shifter so it will let you start the motor and drive normally. Thats just a matter of finding the right wires. I'll take a look at my wiring diagram and let you know... as for the dash if you can live with the neutral light constantly being on then no problems, otherwise pull the dash and remove the lamp.

I got a spare J160 complete with shifter, sensor, fork, clutch slave cylinder and bolts etc
Does have a munched 3rd syncro and 3rd hub but planning on pulling that all apart and replacing parts or just supplying the box with the new bits and pieces sometime anyway :P
Make me an offer via PM :ph43r:

if you put the lsd in you will have to change the rear sub fram as the lsd need two mounts on the back and the non lsd only has one if you dont the lsd will jump around whn you do u tuns
