Title: What Oil Do You Use?

P1GLTZ - August 8, 2009 09:02 AM (GMT)
I took my car in for a WOF on Saturday and the guy that did it said "if you run a thinner oil in it, the VVTI will run heaps better".

I have always just used 15 40 in it and King Toyota recommended using 10 30.

SOOOOOoooo I went home and had my husband do an oil change on the car and use 10 30 and what the mechanic said was actually right. The VVTI kicks in now and the car goes like a rocket.

So im interested in what oil others use?!?!?!

There was another thread similar to this one over here: http://z4.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclu...?showtopic=9095

I think a few people run the Edge 5W30 including myself. Its fully synthetic and Castrol only markets oil, so it has to be good! It a bang-for-buck bargain against any other fully synthetic oils I've seen around.

Its true, the RS200 is a very precise engine with tiny oil galleries, microscopic clearences on the bearings, etc. Thinner oil is able to flow more freely around the motor so it makes sense, the increase in power is probably less resistance on engine internals :)

Castrol Edge 5w30 FTW!

HOT2XS - August 10, 2009 12:56 AM (GMT)
Yep, I'm running Catrol Edge 5w30. K Mart sell it at $59.95 for 5 litres (our cars pretty much need the whole container). Really good stuff! I did run Penzoil Euro 5w40 which may have been a bit better. But way expensive :o

Our cars need 5.2L don't they?

xnickx - August 10, 2009 01:49 AM (GMT)
Recommended oil viscosity and quantities all here :)

http://z4.invisionfree.com/lexusaltezzaclu...?showtopic=2841

About 5.1L to fill including the filter, so a 5L is enough, just won't be "Full full
" LOL

5.1 with filter apparently.

Same here, Castrol Edge 5W30.

DARKSUN - August 10, 2009 03:07 AM (GMT)
Castrol Edge 5w30 :D

Spoon - August 10, 2009 07:46 AM (GMT)
Something-or-other else 5w30. Will prob be going to Edge as the stuff I used wasn't in stock last time I did a change, so I might get something more common.

Need to do oil changes on both cars sometime soon :S

4815162342 - August 10, 2009 11:13 PM (GMT)
Castrol Edge 5w30 here as well

Outlander - August 12, 2009 05:47 AM (GMT)
Same as above, Castrol Edge 5w30, i did run some total 5w30 once but ended up being too hard to get and a bit dear so now i bowl on down to my local Appco and pick up a 5 Litre of Castrol( @ Trade price btw :P)

TezzaRose - August 15, 2009 05:12 AM (GMT)
So...blonde question, if I wanted to top up my oil would Castrol 5W30 be the best to use in my Gita? I'll be doing some traveling shortly.

Robo - August 15, 2009 05:49 AM (GMT)
Mixing oil wouldn't do much damage, but it's recommended to use one type of oil instead.

So 5W30 should b fine, but do it in a full oil change instead. Top up with whatever you're currently using.

Spoon - August 29, 2009 02:32 AM (GMT)
Just did a change to Castrol Edge 5W30, thought I'd copy the rest of you.

yojimbo - August 29, 2009 09:42 AM (GMT)
Castrol edge 5w 30. Changed every event or so. Wait for it to go on sale. I recently bought 6 at $33 on sale at repco.

How often does everyone change there oil? every 5000k or 6months?

I find mine is getting dirty fast so I am changing it every 5000k sometimes before as it gets dirty so fast, anyone know why or what i can do?

Robo - August 31, 2009 01:37 AM (GMT)
Toyota's maintenance schedule says every 15,000km, I do 10,000km

Engine oil suspends dirty particles so they don't damange the engine, just 'cos it gets dirty doesn't mean it's unable to suspend any more dirty particles.

If you're using fully synthetic oil then you're throwing away perfectly good oil.
A friend of mine (who drives a honda  ) & is totally anal about it was changing his Mobil1 10w30 every 5000km. He had a sample tested & it was perfectly fine. He did the same again a 10K & 15K both times the results came back perfect. He even tried 20K & it came back that it was still just within acceptable tolerances.
Basically you can't judge an oils overall condition by sight. If you're that worried about your oil I can get you the contact details for the place my mate used to test his.

This is true.

I have had oil tested in the past @ 10k kays, and the results came back that the oil was still within tolerance.

Apparently the Fuchs lab technician who conducted my check heated it up to 100 odd deg C and checked the viscosity rating. I cant remember the viscosity rating or range for the oil type I had tested but the technician stated it has at least another 5k kays use left.

Ard Righ - September 24, 2009 06:40 AM (GMT)
Like 90% of the people in this thread, I have always used Castrol Edge 5w30, and it works like a dream :)

I get my car serviced every 10,000Kms, because I want to keep it running in good condition.

caveman - September 30, 2009 01:46 AM (GMT)
FYI when i read my copy of the latest superchep auto rag/brochure.

edge 5-30 was pictured with the heady price tag of 29.95 ?. It was late and i was tired, and my work interweb connection wont let me view

Robo - September 30, 2009 02:21 AM (GMT)
Yes that catelog online does say $29.95!

Says it's a saving of $11, means regular price is $40? They've always been $60 in my local Super Cheap Autos!?

Torquenstein - September 30, 2009 02:49 AM (GMT)
Hmmm is that for all the supercheap stores? On the front of the catalogue is super store?

caveman - September 30, 2009 03:20 AM (GMT)
