Title: Traction
Description: Dangerous wet driving.
austyrius - August 17, 2009 11:36 AM (GMT)
I have an 1999 Altezza 6spd manual (3S-GE).
During wet weather, my car seems to lose traction ALOT, I am not even speeding up on purpose or "drifting" on purpose. It seems to be very dangerous and I've been able to control them pretty well but someday, my luck might run out. Could this be a sign that I need new tyres? Or is it because of a 12" subwoofer in the boot??

Definitely the subs man. Give them to a homeless person to keep warm this winter.
Check your tyres while you're at it.

In a word, yes it's because of your tyres. Is your suspension modifed at all ?
Mostl likely you have worn or crappy tyres...on a rear wheel drive it's important to spend a bit more and get some really decent tyres if you don't want to be losing control...

What tyres have you got on your car? That'll be your problem, not the sub?? I had a similar issue with mine. I had Kumhos on the back when I got it & it would let go every where & slide about on the open road in the wet. I recently upgraded to Bridgestone Potenza RE001 & have since not had any problems with grip. I could almost complain I have to much now & its not as much fun to drive ;) but it's definitely safer.

Yea id deffinately say its the tyres . When i 1st bought my car it was exactly the same , id have it in 5th gear cruising round roundabouts in the wet the back would let go very easily , but as soon as i got my toyo t1r's that all stopped and now its nuthing but grip in dry and wet , deffinately invest in some new rubber , its worth every cent

oh ok sweet yeah. I think its because my mates were playing around in my car and kinda made the rear tyres less grippy. That on top of tyres that arent proper branded. Will look around for new tyres.
Cheers.

Ahem.... just marked "Made in China" are they...? :P
Buy a pair of something like Toyos or Bridgestone or whatever, there are a couple of topics on here about people's favourites. Try them on the front for a week, then try them on the back for a week, then decide if you want another pair.
I find the lack of torque and either Falkens or Toyos make it quite difficult to slide!
AND..
Get a wheel alignment! Read up about it first!
