Title: Under Bonnet Rattle
Description: Rattle from around air intake / throttle

rnb200 - August 29, 2009 11:02 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,
Anyone have any idea what the rattle could be caused by coming from around the air intake and throttle body?
(Just up a bit from the red circle in the pic.)
Very noticeable at idle and seems to go away with a few revs.
cheers
Harley

x2. My strut brace came with a fitting that relocated the throttle cable slightly to clear the bar

Hi guys,
thanks for the responses however as Solied Altezza has pointed out I stole his photo from elsewhere on the site so its actually not my motor.
The rattle seems to be coming from inside that cast thing (air intake) connected to the motor.

Guess the only way to find out is to pull the intake pipe off & have a look around the throttle body. Could be the butterfly that's rattling or just a loose bolt. What ever it is, it's not a common problem.

Unfortunately I have the same problem =/ Rattling sound near the throttle.

have any of you guys tried the "mechanics ear piece ?"

get your self a large screwdriver and with the engine running place the tip against your temple and spot "listen" around the area you think is rattling.
this would at least help you to locate more specifically where to start checking for loose / broken components.
the human ear is easily fooled. and you may in fact be "hearing " the problem in the completely wrong place.
this is a more direct and acurate way of locating a rattle.
let us know how you go

Hi guys, have solved the problem - and thanx for the screwdriver listening tip. It was coming from the throttle body and was the solenoid within it trying to balance the air/fuel mix. The problem was a dirty air sensor caused by the seal around it having perished and therefore creating an incorrect air/fuel mix - this was also causing a rough idle. Have now cleaned the sensor with contact cleaner and replaced the seal (+ new air filter) and runs smooth and sweet. Thanx 4 all your comments. cheers Harley
