Title: What Petrol Do You Put In Your Car?

FLO TZA - September 2, 2009 08:04 PM (GMT)
Just wondering, what kind of petrol do u put in your car - RS200 year 2002?

BP? 98 Unleaded?
Shell? 95 V-Power?

Thanks!

HOT2XS - September 2, 2009 08:27 PM (GMT)
If you can afford to run 98 all the time, then go with that. 95 V-power is the next best option though. I run V-power all the time as I do fairly high k's and can't justify paying for 98.

xnickx - September 2, 2009 08:42 PM (GMT)
Mine seems to run best on Mobile 8000 98.

Ideally if you can afford it use 98.

Gull Force 10  :woot:

Same here, although it's part ethanol... possible internal issues at all?

On my N/A it smells like it's running a little rich with Force 10, doesn't stop me using it though :D

caveman - September 2, 2009 09:28 PM (GMT)
i have heard hear say about it being this and that. but had no issues at all over the last year or so.

besides i use my supermarket discount voucher makes it cheaper than 95 :D

I think the issue is long term corrosion of the fuel lines. So yes you won't notice anything for a few years yet then you could be up for new lines & who knows what else. But I guess only time will tell if it's as bad a they say it is.

Toyota's New Zealand after-sales general manager, Paul Carroll, said the car company was sticking to its "very firm" stance that owners of used imports shouldn't put blends containing more than 5 per cent ethanol into those vehicles.

Back on Topic: I use BP or Mobil 98. On the odd occasion I'll put Shell V-Power in if there's no 98 near by but you definitely notice the drop in power. It just doesn't want to rev as freely or as hard.

xero - September 2, 2009 11:22 PM (GMT)
98 Ultimate from BP

Seems to run better for me than the mobil... dunno why...

Plus the BP is on the way home so its easy

JIMKRAZTEZA - September 2, 2009 11:27 PM (GMT)
V- POWER FTW

Stephen - September 3, 2009 12:07 AM (GMT)
V-Power (previously called Optimax).

FLO TZA - September 3, 2009 03:39 AM (GMT)
Yea i sometimes use V-POWER and BP 98. I certainly notice the power of 98. . but would this be too Strong for the car? Like would it cause corrosion, damage of fuel parts?

Thanks. I am thinking should i put V-POWER or 98 for my next ride. .

Ethanol has a lower energy value than regular petrol, however, when ethanol is blended into petrol at 10%, its effect on fuel efficiency is reduced proportionally.

That's Shellspeak for "You will only get 90% of your normal MPG when we add 10% ethanol. :P

Not quite, as the ethanol does burn, but as ethanol raises the spark advance for more power it also lowers the amount of energy in each litre.

Anyone want to do a long-term test? Say, three weeks on each fuel with the MPG carefully worked out...

HaHa sweet guess where you will be getting fuel from if you pass through Rotorua.

Mobil Synergy 8000 FTW

BP 98

No special reason just that the servo is at the end of my street

MightyTeza - September 3, 2009 07:40 AM (GMT)
BP 98

Tried and trusted and works well with the car. ;)

I used to travel between Auckland and Hamilton quite a lot, in the days when petrol was $2.20 a litre, so I tried my own comparison of Shell 95 vs BP 98. Not a very scientific test, but I did my best to keep conditions the same, eg same amount of highway vs town driving, same driving style, etc. I reckon I got around 50 km / tank more on 98 than on 95. That's mostly on a long run.

JTMILLER - September 3, 2009 09:38 AM (GMT)
Always use BP98, in the three lexus's at home we have noticed a funny rotten egg smell when using V-Power, in the old honda we just use that ethanol one and it works fine in the little 4 banger, getting 7L/100 with it :o

cookie - September 3, 2009 10:23 AM (GMT)
Adam from JEM said he would shoot me if I used anything other than BP 98 so that's all I use.

rotten egg smell means the fuel has high sulfur content.

I use

V Power (98 octane)
Vortex Gold (98 octane)
or
Vortex (95 octane)

running on snow button and 60-80km/h zones i get 530-540km before fuel light comes on

OT: Why are you using the snow control in normal driving conditions?

Slows the acceleration. Not as fun to drive, but better fuel economy.

caveman - September 3, 2009 10:53 PM (GMT)
so we agree on the 98 part....
just not sure what brand NZ side.
AFAIK - no shell 98 available ?
So......if we forget about gull's ethanol fuel it's a Mobil / Bp choice.

edit: snow button optional :D

CJSRIDE - September 3, 2009 11:30 PM (GMT)
Sell V power cuz it is closest and supermarket vouchers - other 95s don't produce the same power.
BUT I do prefer to use 98 where I can - but I thought Mobil 8000 had ethanol in it? Certainly the Porirua and Mana Mobil 8000 has the ethanol, and the Bulls one does too, so I have just assumed Mobil has changed to use it in all their stations with the 8000? I certainly prefer Mobil to BP (cars I have owned have always seemed to run better on Mobil fuel).

DrUsTR - September 4, 2009 01:52 AM (GMT)
I use
Vortex 95.. but they dont have that anymore.
So now Vortex 98... occasionally i would use V-power...if I'm low and the closest thing is Shell...

Theres no ethanol listed on the MSDS (MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET) for SYNERGY 8000.

All Mobil sites should be using the same formulated 8000 97.5RON.

Thanks all,

I am wondering, is Castrol Edge 5w30 a good engine oil?

Has anyone uses Gulf Premium 15w40 on their Altezza RS200?

Repco is telling me i should use a 15w40 on my car. . mmm. .

Repco = FAIL :P

5w30, 5w40, 10w30 or 10w40 either in semi or fully synthetic would be the go. Most of us use 5w30 fully synthetic. If you'd searched you would have found this out already.

Robo - September 8, 2009 04:40 AM (GMT)
15W40 is generally the oil used in cars around our year. It won't do damange, but the manual recommends 5W30 or 10W30.

Most people here recommends Castrol Edge 5W30.

I have always used shell V power in my cars, mostly cause it's close and the guy nearly always gives me free magazines and stuff :P

I did start using Mobil for a while but with my last car I didn't seem to get as much out of a tank as I did with V power - havn't tried it with the tezza though.

I fill up before it hit's 1/4 of a tank so it's not sucking the crap out of the bottom.. Do I do damage if I have some V power in there and fill up at mobil?

Geez never thought about it till now..

easier throttle control as I tend to have a heavy foot. but 540km out of a auto :D compared to 430km out of using the standard throttle control. almost has the same effect as cruise control :)

No Pandoras box you won't. You may just have to fill up a couple of times on Mobil 8000 before you notice a difference with the higher octane, due to the vpower 95 diluting the first fill or 2's octane down.

Doesn't it become sluggish accelerating out of an intersection with the snow button on?
