Title: Suspension Click/ping
Description: First 20m or so from cold
SilentOne - September 3, 2009 11:53 PM (GMT)
Hey All,
I'm driving a stock '99 RS200 and have always noticed every time I go for a drive from a cold start, both the front suspension units click/ping once each in the first 10-20m or so as though unlocking or clicking into place. Usually when going over a bump of some kind.
Is this normal/does anyone else get it?
If it's normal, anyone care to explain what/why it does it?

does you car make a grinding sound at the front wheels when you turn travelling slowly ?
how long have had the issue ?
would suggest the normal possibilities, wheel nuts
bottom suspension components ?
shocktower bolts / strut brace ?
lowered / cut springs ?

Has always done it from what I remember, although you learn the cars noises the longer you drive it right. Had it 11 months.
Completely stock so no strut brace or changes to springs/shocks.
Thing is it happens on both sides... normally if it was a major issue it would be localised to one side.. or so I would have thought.
Will listen out for any other noises when I grab lunch today, but there's nothing I've noticed in "normal" driving.

Suspension bushes when cold. When the rubber heats up a bit it expands hence the noise stops. You could try a bit of grease on them or if that fails replace them with new ones but that could get expensive, or just put up with it like you have been.

Cheers E910, not concerned about it just wanted to know if I should be.
Weird thing is, only happens ONCE each. Ah well, can put it to rest more than likely, will keep an ear out though, see if anything changes.

That is weird.
Oh just saw you're referring to the front. Could also be ball joints are they're quiet common.

Hmm ball joints, remember that being bandied around in here and other forums.
Worth checking - will google what to look for.

hmm ok, not just on cold start as I thought.. happens on braking, at the last part of the stopping motion, as the car's momentum shifts back onto all four corners.
Not as pronounced as the first clicks from cold start- but guess I'll be crawling under to take a look at those ball joints.
