TOYOTA ACTS TO CURB DRINK-DRIVING

Toyota has announced it is developing a breathalyser that will lock the ignition of a vehicle to keep people with high levels of alcohol off the road.

Drivers blow into the device, which analyses their breath without them having to put the product in their mouths.

If the breath-test result is positive, the system either warns the driver or locks the vehicle's ignition, depending on the level of alcohol detected.

The hand-held breathalyser includes a digital camera that photographs the driver's face to prevent a false reading from someone other than the driver.

Toyota is testing the device with its wholly owned subsidiary Hino Motors, one of the world's leading truck manufacturers.

The breath-alcohol ignition-interlock system is designed to help companies and organisations better manage their fleet-vehicle operations.

It will be installed on selected trucks and other vehicles of Japanese transport companies and tested over the next three months.

The tests will verify system functionality, particularly ease-of-use in real-world situations.

Drivers will test their breath before they operate a vehicle.

After vehicle use, fleet administrators will monitor and verify the test results which are automatically recorded on a digital tachograph.

The Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transportation and Tourism (MLIT) will also install the system in a vehicle under lease from Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) and conduct tests during everyday use.

TMC and Hino plan to provide results from the testing to an MLIT council on new technologies to prevent drink-driving.

Toyota also intends to apply the test results to improving the system.
