Title: Anyone Have Experience Repainting Rims?

Robo - October 5, 2009 02:46 AM (GMT)
My stock rims have curb marks, and I plan to following the following article to fix them:

Anyone have experience in repairing/repainting their rims?

Things that concern me are not achieving a smooth finish, paint peeling off or paint not durable, so any tips on those would be appreciated.

Would baking the rims after painting make a better finish? If so, what temperature?

I'd get them professionally repaired. Plenty of places doing it these days so the cost has come down a bit. Get a few quotes & see how it stacks up against DIY.
Our rims aren't fully painted, the edges are machined alloy finish so you will loose that factory shine if you paint them. The ones in that link look a bit flat IMO.

1 of MY stock 17" 5 spoke rim has been repaired because the tyre shop scratched it badly when they were doing a puncture repair.
I demanded it to be repaired.

the tricky part is the facial surface has "machined" finish. so they have to repaint the rim , then machine the facial surface.
unfortunately, the machine finish pattern is never the same as the factory pattern.

I had semi repainted my stockers:

I used a green Scotchbrite scrubbing pad to rough up the rim before priming though, and it worked a treat!
And as long as you do it indoors (no dust), you should get a smooth finish.

I painted mine in the garage on a warm summers day and left it in there overnight to cure
