Title: My Diff Issues
Description: Spining the inside Wheel
caveman - October 26, 2009 05:52 AM (GMT)
Hi team
Been having an issue with my diff for some time and looking for answers so i can finally resolve the issue. Earlier today i took Craig(yellowrs200) for a short drive so he could hear what was going on. Which is essentially a shuddering/spinning of the inside wheel when turning corners, most noticiably the left wheel (when turning left). This is very noticable at lower speeds when traveling both forwards or backing. And this is in turn chewing the lunch out of my tyres. I believe the term is tramping, what ever it is there is a large audible shudder when turning sharply at lower speeds.
I have read forums across the globe but nothing has given me a clear cut answer as to what the problem/ issue may be.
Some suggestions here
here say replacing the diff oil with either specific grade may do the trick.
My plate states the diff is A01A - 3.916 ratio Open Centre , although i believe just like the rest of the car may have been added/modded post factory. I recently lifted the rear end and turned the left inner hub with the right wheel on the ground and the trans in neutral. This was very tight/hard to do but was possible (read grunt/sweat). This would lead me to believe that it's not "locked", and have serious doubts it's an open one either.
I am getting desperate for a some sort of soloution or ideas on how to remedy the problem. A new set of tyres (after rotation currently using
acelera tyres as they are cheaper and replacing the DZ101's i had on berfore every 5000 k's is just not an option.) ever 12 months is to much to bear.
Does anyone have a spare diff i can try/test/buy. I don't really have the option of taking the car of the road for days on end.
help ?

I'll give ya $100 for your old one. It's obviously fubared.

Yojimbo! rofl
The LSD won't be ripping your tyres out, I haven't heard anyone else complaining about their TRD clutch pack and the optional stock Torsen is fine. Greeneyes will chirp doing a U-turn from stationary but the tyre wear is fine.
How's the wheel alignment?? What sort of wear shows across the tyre??
caveman - October 26, 2009 07:20 AM (GMT)
probably should have mentioned it's a 5AT.
Rotated two weeks ago, side to side.
Alignment last year with the new tyres and it was in the "green zone" maxed out adjustment once done.
Wear is mostly even and was for the last set. there was slightly more wear on the insides due to the recently removed sub box's extra weight (approx 60-70 kgs).
If it was just a chirp on cornering i wouldn't be anywhere near as concerned. it's the shuddering "tramping" that's causing the concern.
I just think that chewing a set of tyres to less than 50% tread in 9 months and less than 10.000 k's is not normal at all, we don't drive hard at all in fact it's more of a nana style of driving.
@ Yojimbo - thanks for the offer *cough*No*cough*

OK, I just busted a gut jacking up Greeneyes & checking the rear left wheel..
Turns smoothly and easily, so you don't have the stock option torsen!
However the rally Datsun with the clutch-pack LSD was always very stiff to turn one wheel on a jack! Not that we noticed the tyre wear involved....

The term is "scratching", you just have a tight LSD. Mine does it some times.
Offer to buy stands. You don't really need that diff! I'll swap you for a special quiet one that will spin like it's empty when you Jack it up.

Ditto, mines the same....tight scuffs up and chirps :P its great! :)

righto. i thinki got that....
Will have alook under tonight if i can fit my fat head under.
As it stands now i am offering my diff up for swaps for a factory open unit and maybe some cash either way depending.
Can anybody tell me how to identify whatmake/breed my diff may be ?, i figure if i am going to climb under and have a look will try to figure out what i have .....
xnickx - October 26, 2009 11:14 PM (GMT)
Only way to tell is to open up the rear diff cover, and having a look for any markings etc on the LSD unit itself.
What a diff looks like with the rear cover off:

righto folks it's to get this sorted
i need to source an open diff so i can remove mine and see what is going on. has any one got one lying around or spare that i can use for a few weeks ?
i can get one from T-parts (we he said he had one) for $150 but that in the Auckland area so it s a + freight kinda deal and i would prefer to buy of a club member if thats an option first......
caveman - November 7, 2009 02:38 AM (GMT)
I have taken all the advise given so far and put it in the memory bank, and also done more and more reading and have purchased an "open diff" from our friends at t-parts. At this stage i need to remove the offending unit and have a look at my leisure. From all the reading i have done contrary to what the plate says i have a LSD of some type in the rear and possibly i have the worn bush/s issue Madaltezza mentioned. My curse is i can't afford to have the ca off the road for any lenghth of time and the problem is becoming worse/ more evident.
I have a had a good hunt across the net and
here but have yet to find a howto/DIY thread. so will snap a few pic's and have a crack at putting one together.
now before i retro-fit this unit, i have a few questions
1, has anyone done this before and can they offer any tips ?
2, how do i correctly identify what i have ?
3, i can't seem to spot a stamp or part number or any distinguishing marks to help with this ?
thanks

Ok.
Had the diff swapped out today for a factory open unit. Scuffing/tramping GONE. yay.
Wiffee is much happier.
Now, the slip diff that was in there i have attached a few pics to see if i can get someone to Identify it one way or the other.
It's also for sale as it is obviously a tight L.S.D. Serious offers that are fair may be accepted. Or it's trade me for this baby

xnickx - November 18, 2009 07:35 AM (GMT)
Not a locked stock diff is it?
LSD unit looks fairly stock ish?! Most aftermarket brands would have a logo or stamping on the LSD unit's casing
caveman - November 18, 2009 08:30 AM (GMT)
i can only guess..... but it must be a LSD
hence the asking
more pics

caveman - November 19, 2009 07:11 AM (GMT)
can anybody identify ?
goes on trade me on sunday, PM me with serious offers
