Title: Lacking Power Down Low
Description: turbo guys advice pls?
vinex_88 - October 27, 2009 02:58 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,
I'm experiencing quite a bit of lag from my car especially when i put my foot down and takes about 3 sec's before i can actually feel any decent power....
does anyone here have any idea why is that?
I've got a baby turbo so should spool up fast...
long intercooler piping?
Does the quality of the intercooler affect this as well?cos i think mine's just a cheapie trade me crap...
or could it be because of the open diff?
is there any way of fixing this problem???maybe getting it re-tuned??

Could be a combination of things like:
1) Long FMIC Piping
2) Intercooler (too much pressure drop for your boost)
3) Dual mass flywheel
4) Tune (too much fuel maybe?)
I would look at a tune first maybe?

Couple more things are:
Exhaust too big (Bigger exhaust means better flow at high end but longer time to spool)
Type of turbo
Age/condition of turbo

what does it mean by too much pressure drop for my boost? so is my intercooler flowing too much air or too little air?
will definately get my car tuned when i find some 1G-GTE/GZE pistons and rods and do them all together...

oh makes sense too...my turbo is actually quite old...its a VF24 from a V4 sti i think??but no play in the turbo...
another thing i noticed is everytime i drive for longer than 30minutes non stop, the boost gauge will start to jump up and down(not stable) so what could've caused this?

Weeeelllll you know where you can get some 1ggze rods and pistons if you want to rip my crown apart :P
The bigger the intercooler and cheaper the bigger the pressure drop you will get across it, will try and look up some links to explain it better.

http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/intercooler.htmlAlot of equations and crap, but there is some interesting stuff under the title pressure drop.

thanks for that mate...where abouts are you located? maybe i should come and rip it apart...hahah....
and the thingy bout how intercoolers works...man that's alot of words but i'll try to read it...hahah! thanks again..!

Basicaly its not about psi its about cfm (cubic feet per minute). Before your cylinders can build pressure you need to fill all that piping between the turbo and the head. If you got a baby turbo chances are it wont have much cfm.
Picture this your lungs are a turbo and the balloon is your cylinder. Between your mouth and the ballon is a 10 meter hose. How long will it take to blow the balloon up? Pretty dam long in comparison if you had the ballon against your lips.
So reduce the volume between your turbo and the head and vola less lag. But that has its drawbacks obviously. there is a sweet spot you need to find between adequate cooling of the air, flow rate and volume. Less volume increased drag. And less surface area of the intecooler less heat transfer. Bigger is not always better... Unless your talking about a bigger turbo but that will open a whole can of worms... Dam 1gfe...
