Im not sure what is going on but I have driven to Queenstown and just in the past day everytime (except for 1st and 2nd) my accelerator is down more than half the car just revs as if the clutch is in or the cambelt could possibly slipping. Just sounds as if the engine is going faster or something but the car does not accelerate like it used to. Doesn't seem to rev the engine as much as when I looked it was sitting on about 3000 revs but wasn't going any higher. Therefore as I am practically broke I'm avoiding driving it unless necessary. Driving it very carefully as well changing down super early to avoid putting my foot down. Unsure on what to do before I go back to Dunedin in 2 days. But in first and 2nd it still revs and accelerates like it used to making me think it could be something wrong with the gearbox.

RS200Z Manual. 109500kms Cambelt done @ 50000kms (apparently but I'm going to do it again in the near future for my piece of mind) TRC On. Over half a tank of petrol using Vpower from Shell) I hope this is enough information if not please ask.

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light.

On a manual the only place slippage can occur is the clutch, so its not linked to the cambelt, gearbox or diff...

Usually the clutch slips in lower gears as that's when you accelerate hardest, but obviously max power goes through the clutch at higher revs and it gets a hard time with foot well down over 5000rpm in 3rd or 4th. So you might feel it either accelerating away from the lights or overtaking someone, or going up a hill.

If the clutch is slipping a lot you will smell the burning-clutch-plate smell... very distinctive!

If you work out whether or not the clutch is the problem, just take it sweet 'n easy until you can get it changed. Once slipping their grip falls off quickly.

If its a stock dual-mass flywheel then this is the time to change it to an Exedy or TRD one-piece.

And how much would you expect to pay for this in comparison with a normal
one. And if I got it done by a mechanic how
much for everything?

Deffo sounds like a clutch is slipping to me.

Price wise, for VIP members I can get the TRD Clutch Kit for cheap as chips! (1 only @ $1200.00+GST)

Considering here are is the RRP for the stock dual mass flywheel and clutch kit:

If you do chose to go down the factory route, I can do these for VIP members:
Flywheel - $850.00+GST
Clutch kit - $420.00+GST
Release bearing - $84.50+GST

Even with those discounts on the stock parts, still cheaper to go for the TRD kit, deffo something to read into, many many posts around the forums regarding the TRD kit.

Fitting allow:
Labour - allow about 3.5-4.5 hours approx
Also allow a hundred or so for gearbox oil and other consumables etc :D

Im gonna be saving all the way up until Christmas..... Ugh... Might have to work xmas and new years holidays now to save up some extra money to pay for some stuff on this vehicle.

happens dude..... i was in the same situation this time two years ago.....broke, mortgage, broken clutch... crashed sisters runabout, recently had crashed my tez.

ended up saving for a few months over christmas with boarders in my house to help pay for the new exedy clutch and flywheel.

get it inspected by a mechanic for a quote to see if that is what is actually wrong. Also find the time to study up on it and phone around for pricing because there was a huge difference in price for the kits and being a cheeky bugger can help ie can you match/better this? time now might mean a saving later.

search the forum as i have posted before about the clutch upgrade before.(the place i used was in marion square in wellington for the parts which may be of use to you as they might know where to send you in your area or ship the parts to you.

Yeah thanks for the advice. Im so keen on many other things for my car but recently I have had to spend my money elsewhere. Therefore making my mods be put off til later.

Hmm. Im going to see a mechanic today and see what he thinks. If it is the clutch then should I get the cambelt/waterpump done at the same time as I am thinking about doing these anyway?

if your k's warrant it then in an attempt to save over-all expence (ie less total overall hours) go for it.
Then you are only parted from your baby once.....

nah- That belts only done 59,000km.

Toyota build in a safety factor so I wouldn't do them early if you're squeezed for cash.

The change distance has moved from 100,000km to 150,000km I think, I've seen both figures touted around. I did Greeneyes at 90,000km somthing because the car was 10years old.

Get the clutch sorted and build some capital up.

Your totally right Keith.

The 1st cambelt in NZ is to be done @ 100,000kms or 7 years, any belts after (that are done here in NZ), Toyota parts state 150,000kms or 10 years.

How do you know my cambelts only done 59000 kms? As I bought it off some random dude who told me that it was done at 50000... Therefore its only his word as their is no paperwork or markings stating that it was done. So I reckon just do the whole lot. Better safe than sorry. Guy wants to do both things at once when I asked but reckons it is my clutch and it will last til after Christmas if I drive it properly. So Ill wait it out and just drive like my dad would drive.....

There might be somebody on the forum in your area that may give you a hand changing it out for a few beers or something. Good chance to learn some more about your car. It is a fairly basic job, just seems bigger than it is.
In the mean time, check that your pedal has free play in it. At the top of the pedal is an adjustment rod. Make sure that you can press on the pedal at least 10mm before the clutch starts to disenagage, that way you know the pressure plate is 'gripping' the clutch plate properly.

Oh I see. That kind of makes more sense. I guess i wont be changing until 150 then. Save some cash. Might do it when waterpump gets pretty bad though.

Finally today.... after some major slipping she died :( Parked up on some random street and gona go tow it tomorrow/actually today now but yeah. So sad and I cant afford to fix it yet. Clutch is gone :S and cant even get it home.

this looks to be a pretty cheap kit and might be worth looking at, it looks like it is about as close to stock as you could get (minus the dual mass flywheel). You could probably get the flywheel machined to lighten it at a later date.

Deffo the TRD one if you can save up the extra little bit!

Many threads regarding the TRD one, and the lightened flywheel is a dream to drive with!
