Title: Hacked, Or Cracked?
Description: Read on...(not really about Runescape)
Doom Blade - March 4, 2005 08:17 PM (GMT)
The purpose of this guide is to correct badly used terminology. E.G. The use of the word "hacked" and all other words realted.
So you've been "Hacked"? Nah, you haven't, a hacker isn't someone who wants your junk...
Here's the definition of:
*hacker* n.
/Originally, someone who makes furniture with an axe./
1. A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.
2. One who programs enthusiastically (even obsessively) or who enjoys programming rather than just theorizing about programming.
3. One who enjoys the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming or circumventing limitations.
*hack* n.
1. An incredibly good, and perhaps very time-consuming, piece of work that produces exactly what is needed.
2. To work on something (typically a program). In an immediate sense: ?What are you doing?? ?I'm hacking X.? In a general (time-extended) sense: ?What do you do around here?? ?I hack X.?
*cracker* n.
/Coined ca. 1985 by hackers in defense against journalistic misuse of
hacker/.
1. One who breaks security on a system.
*cracking* n.
1. The act of breaking into a computer system; what a cracker does.
2. The persistent and dogged repetition of a handful of fairly well-known tricks that exploit common weaknesses in the security of target systems.
So you see? You haven't been hacked, you've been cracked.
Now for the obvious part of protecting your account(which mostly isn't so obvious to people).
999 out of 1000 times chances are it was your mistake. You fell for a keylogger program, got scammed, or just somehow gave away your password. It's easier to blame someone else(the hacker), right? Don't do it, you're just shoving the problem away and acting like a baby. Grow up, learn from your mistake, an never do it again.
Well, my mini guide is over, so.... *dissapears*

Well said guide.
As a hacker/craker, I would agree with u on the point where 99.99% of the time, its ppl's fault when a hacker/craker exploits them.
Btw I dun hack/crack RS accounts but other 'hackable thing'. Muhahahah

I can say that 90% of the ppl who say that 'they got hacked' are lieing to get stuff from u. Rest 10% got hacked because they said the password to the hacker.

Ok, so I was browsing this site as Im a n00b in combat, but levelling quickly. I just wanted to add a comment on this guide.
Nobody has been cracked in Runescape:
You may ask why i can be so sure? This is why.
Crackers are people who spend their entire lives learning languages, to break into computer systems. Nobody who doesnt can crack. This is because the files are encrypted, Jagex probably has a firewall on each server which blocks exploits. They probably run ant-virus software which is scanning and updated regularly.
Companies which have huge revenue, i.e. Microsoft, software giants, famous people, are cracked because its a target. The cracker wants fame. Cracking a big company is a fame achieving target, not some small time internet game. If Michael Jackson played it, he would be cracked, not you.
So how were your items taken?
1. Guessable password
This isnt cracking. If you leave a password guessable, the cracker doesnt need to bypass the security. This is guesswork
2. Scamming passwords
If you let people know enough about you they can gues it or use a password machine. There are no three attempts before its blocked... This is scamming.
Conclusion:
I know its not very comforting and much easier to blame a cracker, who is high profile, but at the end of the day it was due to a guessable or scammed password.
You weren't hacked or cracked. You were scammed.

although i think keylogging is considered scamming...
Vibu212 - March 14, 2005 10:19 PM (GMT)
Still for you to be keylogged means someone have sent u a keylogger.
king_runite1 - March 15, 2005 08:16 PM (GMT)
The person who writes a keylogger is a programmer (hacker or cracker depending on their motive). The person who sends it you as a tool to help your runescape game is a scammer.
