‘Have you seen that Johannes Greer? The South African?’
‘Yes sister, I have. He’s not a bad fellow, actually.’
‘Jaya, he is much too young for you!’
‘Calypso, no, he’s not.’
‘I say, first the Zambini family, then the Leitz family, now Mister Greer! So many new people in
London! Oh, our parties will be so much more enjoyable now!’
‘Yes, I do believe that they all caught wind that there was an amazingly beautiful young
Lestrange girl by the name of Jaya…’
‘Jaya!’
‘No, they’re all coming here because first of all, England is the most stable and prosperous
country in Europe at the moment, not to mention the fact that there’s that fellow running around
Germany like a madman killing people.’
‘Oh Tiber, there’s no fun in you.’

Before the turn of the century, there were five great magical nations: England, France,
Germany, Russia and Nigeria. England, France and Germany were undergoing great economic
prosperity. All three countries were being controlled by the pure-blooded elite, similar to the
aristocracy of the muggle world, however a growing middle and wealthier lower classes
meant that generally, those three countries were good to live in. Russia was different. Their
Ministry of Magic was in shambles, but the Minister of Magic, Alexei Ivanova, ruled by fear.
There was little economic prosperity, but the sheer number of wizards living in Russia was
enough to ensure that Russia was a big player on the European stage. Nigeria was much the
same, however they ran a vigorous blood purification scheme, in which muggle born and half
blooded witches and wizards were subject to unthinkable treatment. Yet despite this, there
was a fairly even balance of power in the world. What none of these countries expected was
a disturbance in the form of a then seventeen year old boy by the name of Gellert Grindelwald.
Ever since fleeing England in the late 1890’s, Grindelwald had travelled throughout Eastern
Europe, gathering support for his visions of a pure wizarding race, and then pure wizarding
supremacy all over the world. He was only a teenager, yet he talked like a man of much more
experience. He had been expelled from school at sixteen, yet he was brilliant with a wand in
his hand. Yet not even the young man himself didn’t imagine that his movement would be as
successful as it was. Soon enough, he began building himself an army of sorts. He found
himself a small band of close followers, who, despite being much older than him, bowed to
his every request, and on top of that he enlisted the help of hundreds of civilians who vowed
to be part of his guerrilla force when they received the signal.
At the strike of midnight on the 1st of January, 1900, Grindelwald struck one of the big magical
powers – Russia. With the help of thousands of civilian soldiers, he captured the ministry for
magic and appointed one of his top dogs, a Polish man named Gregor Nechkov, as the new
leader of the country. Nechkov enforced Grindelwald’s blood purity scheme, and since then,
thousands of wizards and witched have been killed, and the magical population of Russia has
all but fallen into complete chaos. Six months later, Grindelwald struck a deal with the Nigerian
minister of magic, who shared his ideas of a completely pure magical race being the supreme
rulers of the world. He agreed to have some of Grindelwald’s people in his ministry, and also
agreed to protection for the young man. Grindelwald was untouchable.
The people of England saw what was happening in the world around them, and the ministry
made sure that they were secure from all threats of such infiltration. Ever since the turn of the
century, people of lesser blood purity slowly made their way into the civil service, and of
course they were firmly against Grindelwald’s ideas. Even the pure blooded elite understood
that England’s economic survival depended on the lower classes, the half bloods and the
muggle born witches and wizards, so it was a unanimous agreement that Grindelwald had to
be kept out at all costs. The Ministries of France and Germany weren’t exactly as convinced,
and so pretty soon, all of the smart families in both those countries moved to England, where
their safety could be assured.
Despite the rising threat of the young and ambitious Grindelwald on the safety and Freedom of
the English people, England has it’s own problems. A great number of the pureblooded upper
class are afraid that the balance of power in their own country is shifting, and while most
agree that Grindelwald’s ideas are dangerous, they don’t want to see themselves ruled by a
half blood, or, even worse, a muggle born. A great deal of them are uncomfortable with the fact
that there are a number of ‘middle class’ people who have money to rival their own, but what
they don’t realize is that while they’re having their balls and their tea parties, those below them
are pretty much fuelling their lifestyles.
For most, the threat of Grindelwald doesn’t effect their day to day lives, so the world keeps
spinning, but everybody knows that the strong ones aren’t meant to fall like this.
