- Lyza is usually the girl who sits near the front of the class because she refuses to wear her glasses. She gets along with teachers marginally well, but not so much with other students. Her brash, outspoken nature tends to turn many of her peers away, but she does not mind much. She finds many people her age to be difficult at best. Every now and then, however, she'll make an exception and put on her party face.
Lyza keeps herself well groomed and clean, but she doesn't mind getting her hands dirty. That is possibly why she enjoys working with the horses so much. In Ipswich, it's inevitable - there's mud everywhere. It means there's always plenty to do, but the girl enjoys the satisfaction of hard work.
In the classroom, many people recognize that Lyza is a quick thinker and fairly intelligent. She [usually] puts in a decent effort for grades and has a teacher for a parent, so schoolwork is marginally easier for her. Usually, she is polite or fair to her peers but is exceptionally wary of those who tease. There are only a select few students who actively do this, but when others laugh at her expense, she associates them with the one who started it. When she runs into students in town, she does her best to leave the situation, unless she has reason to think they're being halfway decent.

- At the age of twelve, Lyza's mother died of a brain tumor. She had been struggling with headaches for years but as they were common in her family, she thought little of it. Corrinne and Justin worked as professors of Latin and literature, respectively. Corinne's death at the end of the school year left Justin distraught and without a clue as to how to raise their daughter.
At that point, Corrine's sister, Samantha, invited them to come live with her. When he wanted, she suggested, he could take up a position at the local private school. And she promised Lyza's education would be top notch, exchanging favors among her contacts on the school board. Her old house on the edge of the forest would be a quiet and rewarding exchange for the hustle and bustle of the big city. After some negotiating it was decided that this was in Lyza's best interest, and they moved in with Sam.
It was Sam who nudged Lyza to get into horses soon after she arrived. She works out of her home, so she's always been a sort of second mother to her niece. Their relationship has flourished - Lyza sees Sam as her best friend, not just as a parental figure. Lyza and Justin do not get along nearly as well; he was never the fatherly type and tries his best to keep her reigned in.
