It's prison for some and heaven for others. It's all a matter of if you can beat the system or not. Located on the gulf coast of Texas, the Barlet Institute is a haven for confused and upset parents all over the world. The Institute was created in the mid 90's for incurable teens. Their disease? Homosexuality. Every year, hundreds of teens are ripped out of their homes and shoved into an unfamiliar environment. An environment where they are forced to hear how evil they are on a daily basis; where they are forced to hear that they have to change or they will be sent to hell.

"So how’d you get caught? Did you trust your parents and come out to them? And let me guess, they didn’t react the way you wanted them to. Or maybe word got around that you were dating who you weren’t supposed to be? Me? I was careful about everything. My overly Christian parents never figured out their daughter was a lesbian. At least until they walked in on me and my latest girlfriend at the end of my freshman year. Things did not go over well, as you can imagine."

It's not as bleak as it seems though. Most of the teens refuse to believe that they are evil. They know that the majority of people in the world accept them for who they are and who they love. Luckily for them, the staff can't be everywhere at once; they aren't all seeing or all knowing. How would they know what goes on behind closed doors? If they are careful, they can get away with just about anything. Most of them take advantage of being stuck in a set of buildings filled with kids like them.

"I got the bible quoted at me for hours, lectures about how what I was doing was wrong, and declarations about how I’d ruined their lives. Great parents, right? So I, being the smart ass that I am, told them I was into girls and there was nothing they could do about it. Again, that didn’t go over well. "

The locals of the coastal town of San Augusto are pretty laid back when it comes to the students from the Institute. They keep their mouths shut when see a kid from the Institute out when they're not supposed to be, and let them go about their business in the town. Good thing too, because the teens would surely go insane if they had to stay on the desert-like grounds of the Barlet Institute. If they're careful, it's easy to sneak out to the beaches, the club, and the great places to shop out in San Augusto.

"They had me talk to a priest and he recommended sending me to the Barlet Institute, a place that world turn me straight. So that’s how I ended up here. It’s my second year and I hate it more then you can ever know, but at least now I know the ropes now, and maybe I can help you out too."

So how'd you get caught? Because you seem to be the newest addition to the
Barlet Institute.
Take my advice, wear earplugs at mass.
